How to Lower Music In A Video? Please Help

Hey everyone, I had an outsourcer make me some videos and unfortunately the music is too loud and its hard to hear the voice over. I'm basically stuck .mov files right now and I would really like to either turn the music down up the voiceover up, what would be the best way to do this? What program should i use? Any and all suggestions are much appreciated

That's gonna be very difficult if you only have it on 1 layer. I would suggest you try a compressor on it, wihth any music editing software (cubase, reason, etc.) but I wouldn't get your hopes too high.

I would just ask the outsourcer to do the, again though, I mean if he delivered something that you are not satisfied with.. if he says no, just leave him some negative feedback or smthg..

With adobe premiere elements (about $100) you get a sound mixer built in so you can lower the volume on any track and raise it on others. works great.

Have a look for open source video/audio editing... it shouldnt be a difficult task to separate your audio or to influence the volume

Sony Vegas handles handles multiple sound tracks nicely but if you only got one track you may have a challenge.

Typically, any media editing software will handle that. iMovie, etc, there are a bunch of free examples that you can get without having to break a budget on the heavy duty softwares. You can also use audio software like Logic, Soundtrack, Pro Tools. Audacity is free-and works well if you take a few minutes.

I think you are stuck. The .mov file is compressed and layers are lost so you only have one layer on possibly 2 tracks. Your best bet is to track down the individual who edited and ask them to lower the music track by some db's. If not, put in some subtitles.

You've probably solved this by now but for future reference...

Method: (Use Audacity free software)

If you no longer have access to the timeline of the project, then one trick you can use is to split the stereo into two tracks (>Split Stereo Track) and then invert one of the tracks. (Effect > Invert) and then turn the the project into mono (Click channel, Select "Mono"). This will merge the channels into one, adding the inverted vocals onto the normal vocals and producing a muted cancelation of the vocals sound waves.

This happens because most editors will mix down the vocals to be centered evenly but will offset the score / instruments between left and right. (Bassy sounds go left, Guitar goes right..)

By inverting one channel and then adding it back onto the other channel you are canceling out the vocals and leaving the score / music.

If you have only 1 layer (Music & vocals), You'll need to use an eq and multiband compressor plugin so you could isolate the vocals as much as possible and pump them up.
Otherwise, if you could manage the music and vocals steam separately, you'd have to use the sidechaining compression technique, meaning put a compressor plugin on the music steam with the sidechain trigger coming from the audio channel and set the treshold, attack and release controls of the compressor, so that when the vocals kick in, the music is automatically lowered in volume.
