Ecoomerce Site: Help With Choosing Platform

Hello,

i need a custom ecommerce site, i will be wheels and tires. i would like to get an insight in different ecommerce platforms, or if it would have to be a custom built shoppin cart.Im basically looking for a site when a customer would be able to enter their vehicle information (year, make, model, and submodel of vehicle) and have the option to search for tires, wheels, or wheel and tire packages. there is 1000's of products in these categories and making products connect with other products to create combos (wheels + tire packages) in the back end so i would need a good shopping cart to handle all the data, as im thinking there might be around 20,000-40,000 products, and there is more than 16,000 different vehicles from the year 1990-2012, i have all products/vehicle data in excel files too, so shopping cart should include an upload for excel.

what do e-commerce sites with massive product list run on? are most of them on customized shopping carts?



So what would you guys recommend me?

I do not have an e-comm site, but the developers at my work say that Shopify is a great platform. I don't have too much insight into it, but I do SEO on a shopify store and its not too bad. Seems pretty solid. I'd say stay away from something like VirtueMart though. I've worked a little in that and didn't like it at all. Sorry couldn't be of more help

Its best for people starting with Ecommerce sites (I ran a store on openkart and it was as easy as wordpress)

I know X-cart has modules made for that by default. Lots of ways for it to sort the results. You just may run into some performance issues as you would with just about any cart system with so many products and advanced sorting like that.

ive tried magento, and it runs super slow with all the information i had on it....and a couple of developers couldnt customize it the way i wanted it in the back end.

Hm.. I know there are a few extensions to boost the speed for large sites. Also, I've seen sites similar to what you want to do as in, they create categories by manufacturer, and then attributes by models/submodels.. people can filter directly to their manufacturer/model with the layered navigation in like.. 2-3 clicks.

anyways, that's the one I use for my sites, but they are not as large as yours, about 1000 SKUs on the biggest one. But I have worked for a company who had 15 000 SKUs on their magento store and it wasn't slow at all, actually their site was pretty awesome. Unfortunately their senior management wasn't, and they crashed and burned.. I really like Magento, I've worked on wordpress ecommerce plugins also but I think they are crap compared to the flex magento can have.

Magento is certainly an ecommerce solution wich is capable of easily handling products within this range - from what i've heard the limit of the CE of Magento goes up to 400k products...

Magento in particular isn't slow it just needs more ressources than other ecommerce systems - but for your planned amount of products I wouldn't reccomend another ecommerce solution. In what environment did you run magento and with which Extensions?

It is slow if it does the same output. If on one server I can run a "Hello World" test script and have it done in 1 second, and then do another "Hello world" test script which does the same thing overall and it takes 2 seconds... it's slower. You shouldn't need a dedicated or even VPS server for <2000 products. With magento you do, short of optimizing it (compared to other carts which already are.)

For adding these no. of products, you should choose Magento. It has a capability to add 35000+ products.

Try Opencart. Why not magento or prestashop? Developers of Magento and prestashop cost very much, all these systems is too big, and not comfortable of use.

Opencart is easy platform, where simply add unlimited products, there are a lot of developers in low prices.

Go back to Magento and this time follow some of the caching / performance guides (there are many). There is a good reason as to why Magento is the market leader: http://tomrobertshaw.net/2012/02/feb-2012-ecommerce-survey/

Of course running it out-of-the-box with the default config is very naive, you're making it load *everything* and render the same pages for *every* visitor. Even on a decent server you'd be wrestling with performance issues.

With a little tuning and configuration you can easily run a 40,000+ product store on a cheap VPS. Sign up to Amazon AWS and you can get a free VPS for a year and a bunch of other features (CDN etc.)

Finding talent to extend it the way you want is not difficult, it's the widest used ecommerce platform and there are plenty devs out there. But as the saying goes... "if you pay peanuts, you get monkeys"

Magento can do all of this and so can osCommerce.

Every eCommerce platform can be modified to do the task. The only matter how much time and money it will take. And don't forget about maintenance cost, hosting.
If you go with Magento, no doubts it can handle it, but you need a very good dedicated server, because it's extremely slow and it's hard to modify. Support and custom development is very expensive.
Cs Cart looks good and customizable, x-cart is very easy to modify and custom development doesn't cost that much as on other platforms.
Don't try hosted solutions, it's a waist of time. Don't use cheap hosting, you'll be disappointed whatever platform you choose.

Use Magento Community Version, it is hands down the best ecommerce platform available free.

You will need a dedicated server to run Magento, keep in mind it can be difficult to learn the file structure (1000's of files) and the back-end admin is complex too, if you cant do that then I would go with Volusion eCommerce.

Not sure if it would suit your needs, but I have some nice development experience with Satchmo (http://www.satchmoproject.com/). Doesn't look that shiny as other options you have, but at least it has some pretty solid codebase.
