Banking blunder almost gives me heart attack

OMG just got an sms from HSBC bank saying i had spent $748 at a local pub! Yes sure i had used my debit card at the pub but not for $748. so i called their hotline only to find they had made a mistake. Jeez i think from now on i will be triple checking my statements - how could they make such a big mistake!
Anyway just venting.

Anybody else experienced these problems?

sure .. I deposited cash at the same Bank of America branch 3 times - and each time they put the money into someone else's account.

From that time on I always keep my receipts no matter what -- eventually they would find the mistake themselves if I didn't point it out myself
but still like you got -- it is shocking when you see a mistake like that.

Thats a good idea. i was wondering if HSBC had been hacked again and their system compromised - as this wouldve been an automated sms.

Banks and all suppliers make mistakes...and almost never in your favor it seems. Check all receipts and statements imho. Just a quick scan and you will pickup anything that doesn't look right.

Still one guy in NZ asked for a $100,000 overdraft and the bank accidentally made it $10,000,000. Needless to say he left the country and spent a large portion of it before they caught him a couple of years later if I recall correctly.

Never, EVER use a debit/credit card in a Bar. EVER. This time was a mistake... but trust me... Bars and Restaurants use an "open receipt" on your credit card slip where you get a sub-total and a tip entry (hand written).

Always fill out your receipt entirely, and never leave any lines blank. If you decide to leave your tip in cash, write "cash" on the tip line, or use cash entirely.
