Computer science isn't just programming. You need a strong mathematical background in order to do well in CS.

Nonsense. CS is such a wide discipline and this means minimal general restrictions. One does not need to know how to approximate the Navier-Stokes equations solution to be a great web programmer for example.

I meant more as a Computer science major. I am majoring in CS and a lot of the classes are based on algorithms, data structures, etc. Most of the courses that will most likely be required to be taken, will require a great deal of mathematics. Software engineering is more practical and is often offered separately in a university.

I figured you might be so. And all that is very useful - if you find a job that requires it I 'm not saying you won't, I 'm saying there 's less demand in the market for theoretical background. The guys here aren't looking to find out what 's the theory behind 6NF in relational databases - they 're out to learn the skills that will allow them to enhance their standards of living

That said, I must stress that theory is important.

That said, I must stress that theory is important.

Well I go to one of the best CS schools in the US and more than 95% of our graduates get a job within 6 months so I'm not too worried haha. I just want to make sure CEOPhillip understands what exactly a CS degree will entail.

I actually prefer application rather than theory, especially since my math is not particularly good. I wouldn't want someone else to get into something they do not particularly enjoy.

Oh, maybe I misunderstood him. I just saw that he said "IT is basically computer sciences without the coding aspect(thinking of switching over)", so I assumed that meant he was thinking of switching to CS.

When it comes to programmers and designers, I haven't had great experiences with them. The job is never completed properly, they take too long, do a crap job, or ask for more money than was quoted. I'm yet to find someone who is reliable, so I end up doing the work myself! Although it is time consuming, I always get a better job done. PHP is a very useful langange in IM.

I study MSe CS and I have to say that this is some serious shit, if you do not take it AT LEAST as a 9-5 job, you're lost.

Coding lets you make your computer do what you want it to even when no one else has thought of that before. A truly useful skill for the innovative among us!

Learning to code has been a huge help for me. I'm a sysadmin and I code my way out of mundane tasks every day.

I'd say if you know some object orientation like Java or C# and a web based language like PHP then you're off to a good start.

start learning php, python and ruby for online stuff.

once you understand the thoery of programming its just a matter of getting familliar with the syntax of each language.

I'd suggest you avoid learning PHP because of the bad reputation it has. Java is a nice pick. Teaching yourself Python or Ruby is a good thing, but you'd better to learn some functional languages to understand some techniques used by professional programmers (Clojure, Erlang).

Just knowing the syntax of a language is not sufficient, try joining some opensource project, be active at github. The things you publish on the Internet might become a nice addition to your resume. All those things help to present thyself as a valuable and experienced developer => get more money.

As a non artistic type, learning some basic html and css helps when I wind up working for a company that is planning to join the 21st century and get a website. They usually pay way too much, are way to over excited and jump at the chance to buy garbage. BUT, at least I can interface with the designers, review their work and keep the boss from being TOTALLY a$$ raped.

Trying to learn PHP right now. PHP, so far, is a lot like quickbooks. You literally want to put a pistol in your mouth EVERY..SINGLE..DAY but the reward is that once the pain and suffering are over...you have a valuable skill. So I'm sticking with it...even if I have to walk away from the computer 1000 times. Have gotten past the great mod_rewrite divide only to land in the world of errors that come seemingly from nowhere. (one server, one script & its copy, exactly the same...2 different sets of malfunctions...theoretically impossible? apparently not with php) 5 months and counting, I'll give you the good report someday before I die when I actually code something useful. Back to deleting everything...and starting over AGAIN...whatever......

A well paid job for very little effort, plus it's fun. If you're gaining C# knowledge then there's no point learning PHP imo, contrary to some posters above. Write your server side stuff in ASP .Net, you can use everything you've learned from C#.

I would say to learn JS though, you're dead in the water without it if you're doing web stuff.

Knowing the base logic of programming has tons of mileage. So modular and useful.
