A gem as in - you either/or got lucky and have good content so people just started following you (probably the early days on twitter) or now days you have people such as _ollyriley who started off retweeting pictures of naked girls that was sent to him.
Now days its only easier to do the latter, as the majority of quote accounts e.t.c have been taken up....only way to get to there is to do the menial task of following people that you believe will have a interest in what you are talking about.

Yes you can, but you need backup first.
Imagine you own 5x 5k accounts, and those 5 accounts
all out once start promoting a newly made account?
It takes time to reach a certain number of QUALITY followers. I've had my quotes account for almost 2 years and can't get pass 10,000 all the while another account went from 200,000 to over a million in a matter of months! Funny thing, I see him post all of my quotes couple of hours after me. Sometimes I wonder how it all works.

Follow 150 in your niche a day. I prefer going to a twitter account with 100k followers and expanding each of there tweets to see who's retweeting them and following those people. Do this Mon. - Thurs. wait until The next Mon. and unfollow the ones that don't follow back using ManageFlitter, Iunfollow, or JustUnfollow. Do this and you'll have 2000 follows in a month. Also use Twiends. I get about 50 new follows a day with 30 min effort. Make sure you Tweet at least 3 times a day minimum with at least 1/3 of your tweets having no links. Use #'s with niche keywords and retweet followers tweets. Cross advertise your twitter account on all social media sites and you'll reach 10,000 in a view months. you will find that the first 10,000 is the hardest. The follows will speed up after that. Also make sure you tweet pics and videos also.

Try using the buzzbundle app, it'll find fun stuff you can retweet and will help with ideas for you own tweets. But it does not just twitter, but also facebook, g+, blogs, forums, etc.
As money attracts money......similarly to make something popular you need to show it be in huge demand

well i got 100 in this week just by searching for a niche, and simply commenting about what they tweeted, gave them a thumbs up,something positve.
only did that like 10 times and my numbers slowly went up.
just my two sents. when you show you care they care too.
wont get you 5k but its something..
