If somebody buys a photo on iStock, then he can use it on multiple places, right? So how do iStock administrators can know if a place where you can see that iStock photo belongs to that buyer, another buyer or a non buyer?

You should also know that a microcode digital id can be put in images and easily id any copy of the image. Getty Images makes a fortune out of suing people who use their images. They do it all the time, and as stated above, they can demand their fair market value and you have to pay or get sued, and you WILL lost that suit, at least in the USA and our reciprocal copyright treaty countries.

You are probably safe with any image that has been used many thousands of times, but if an image has been sold 300 times, and there are 3000 of them online, it is clear the image is being pirated. You simply insert the microcode into the image as soon as you see the published quantity outstrip the sales. Asking for a image user to end purchase credentials to prove they bought the rights for the image is simply an e-mail.

I am not saying it is even likekly that you will get caught, most people never do. But when someone is caught, they are fucked. There is no way out, and they have to pay, and it is not by any means an uncommon occurrence.

Why in the world would you build a land mine to drive your site over in the future on purpose?

I think there is a fine line between Black Hat and theft. In my opinion, black hat is how to manipulate systems within the rules to create a gain. These photographers spend their own time and money to develop pictures for use on the web. Stealing their images for reuse is what I would call "bad hat" and has no place here. Think about when an affiliate marketer skims or when a client doesn't pay...it is the same thing. Also similar to newbies trying to automate clicks on Adsense or similar. At the end of the day, you want to create value for all parties, which will go along way towards creating an automated system that you don't have to re-create every week. I am just parroting things I have read here, but I am pretty keen on who the successful people are here and it seems that they all have this in common. 2 cents please...lol.

What I do is I keep a habit of downloading free images everyweek on sites like ist0ck, shutterst0ck & thinkst0ck. They have a free image everyweek for promotion purpose. I have been doing this for like a year so I have plenty of photos which I can use for different themes of my site. So that would not be considered illegal and is safe to use, isn't it?

Or if you have a way which can find those images which had once be freed to dl, then you can use it if you could find the source, am I right?

Also, downloading and reusing images on your site could be easily traceable, as some of you mentioned that there is an id attached. But how about if I use screenshot? Could I get away with it? I would really like to know how those reverse image engines work.

Yeah, not worth risking bankruptcy for.

TinEye and Google Reverse Search can be used to find your image, so obviously iStock will ask to see if your licensed for that image.

That's why i make almost all images by my self get a camera, take a photo and take some of your time to nicely edit it in photoshop.
And since most of you are looking for those business images where a "businesswomen" or "businessman" hold a sign or pretending to do something, you can find people on fiverr who will do that for 5$, even a girls in bikini ^^ .

There's a much easier and cleaner way of getting images.. a way where even the seller makes some money.

Namecheap offers several deals for its customers, one being free stock photos from depositphotos.com. You can get 35 free images, if you spend about $50 with NC, and get 70 images if you spent about $150 with NC. I have multiple accounts with NC, and keep transferring domains from an old account to a new one every year to avail these deals... It's a clean trick and a good one to make money.

FYI... if you spent $150 or more on a namecheap account, you can even avail 4 months SEOMoz pro subscription!!

I dont think so, because its a different picture. You could have created this picture by placing each pixel yourself, so its no provable copyright infringement.

It depends on the country you or the artist live in, though.

The scene: a packed court room, the defendant starts to testify ...

"I uploaded this movie that I encoded, it's different to the one on the Bluray disk that your accusing me of copying. I created the film myself and it just happened to turn out extremely similar to the one on the Bluray disk. The moving image I made doesn't match the resolution of the Bluray disk therefore you cannot prove that I committed copyright infringement. It's an incredible coincidence the film I made exactly matches the film on the Bluray disk that came out prior to me making my film ..."

You see how ridiculous that is? Especially since for civil proceedings where a burden of proof isn't even required just a preponderance of evidence that supports a conclusion.

Its not if it is proveable in court or not. The question is do you want to deal with a lawyer and possibly go to court. These big companies have deep pockets and will spend it.

a couple of other options are
#use Google image search and use the free to use license or whatever option
#take heaps of your own photos, a good smartphone will be ok and buy a piece of white cloth for background product shots
#download heaps of images and spend several days with photoshop changing them, use transform, color correction, smudge etc and build up a library
#join art.xxx affiliate program and use their images, even link to the image and get paid for sales
