What really happened to co.cc?

There not all down, few of my co.cc sites are still up, you're right about the main co.cc site being down though.

So what is the criteria for being taken down or not on these cases?
So I guess you'd better be prepared to replace them all as chances are that they will disappear one by one.
None of my co.cc domains is currently up (I got about 20).

may be they are packing up, and soon whom co.cc are still up will be gone.
I think they are closing down. They don't allow new registration of new "domain"/"sub-domain". Perhaps they will just maintain those who are already up and running.
They never really recovered from "google deindex", even if they are now indexed, but a lot of antivirus(like eset) still flag co.cc sites as potentially dangerous site.

If you google it, you'll see many people complaining or wondering where all their co.cc domains are gone.
Mine went all down yesterday, but some posts from other users are dated few weeks ago so I suspect it's just a matter of time and all will be down.
It's always better option to buy a domain for yourself because you are not depended to someone else domain

If you need to create tons of sites, it's, again, better to buy some good looking domain and then make tons of subdomains.

I do not mean to be unkind or unfriendly, but these threads seem always a good opportunity for some people to teach the obvious
(and possibly one more chance to show their signature...). The fact that a paid domain, cheap or not, is better than a free one is OBVIOUS.

I was curious if anyone knew the reason why co.cc is dead.

Because they didn't had a reason to keep it and because google suspended it ?

They will check the domains for traffic and put a feed on them. I'd bet a $100 that they'll do exactly this trick. They are not the first.
