It's your download speed that matters as you will be downloading pages (and images). The upload speed is only for data you are sending.
You should see a huge improvement using your own machine compared to a VPS which is shared with other people.
Make sure you get some fast proxies or Sky will ban you!

Looks good. Presumably this is not a Windows VPS though? Do you think this is a better option to running my server from home with 37mbps bandwidth?

Blimey, the VPS's in your footer are quite a bit cheaper. Do you have a page here in the BST section? I did look but i couldn't find anything. I wanted to have a look at some reviews

I get a bit nervous when it comes to handing out my IP as it is a perfect dedicated IP to use with the many SEO programs! I did a lookup on it though and it is registered with www.singlehop.com in Chicago, USA. Does that help?

However that just means they do their business on it and doesn't relate directly to the servers they provide. Assuming it's done right, then no they don't use OVH obviously. However, you can do the math they offer for dedicated servers and see how many people they cram onto a single server. Essentially paying for 1/2 or 1/4 of the server when you're only 1/30 on the box.If you don't care about premium bandwith, I'd switch to OVH. Lots of power and bandwith, not so much on price. BHW hates me and is still destroying my post Perhaps an admin will get around to fixing the JS problems?

Cool, thanks for your help. The big problem is that I have no idea what performance I actually need. I know I get physical memory shortage messages at the moment so 2Gb is definitely not enough and is causing a bottleneck. Whether an extra Gb of RAM would clear the bottleneck or whether I actually need another 4Gb RAM and perhaps 2Gb CPU too, I don't know. Certainly at the moment the limitation is with performance rather than bandwidth so the OWH idea I think is sensible. My feeling though is a dedicated server at home with 37mbps download is probably better than most VPS solutions and it is certainly cheaper. If you were buying a new PC, you definitely wouldn't buy 1 at the spec of these VPS's. My 2.5 year old desktop was pretty middle of the road when I bought it and it has 4x the physical memory of my VPS!

I was just messing around What info you want to give up is your decision.
Some programs will use up all available CPU, while others will stay roughly the same regardless of what it's doing. Others increase cpu/ram usage based on download/upload speed (due to the content coming in/going out). Even more, you could be needing an SSD due to poor IO performance of the hard drives (this is even more critical when on an oversold VPS because others may be maxing it.) I've ordered an OVH server the other night, and if you would like I can provision you a VPS to test what you need. It wouldn't be a permanent VPS, but you could judge the amount of resources you would need. If you want to try that, just let me know and I'll send you a PM with some details.
2gb ram for XP means about 1gb for apps. The other 1gb is for windows itself. I wouldn't recommend trying to use anything less than 2gb for SEO apps, especially if its doing alot of work. A 2ghz CPU isn't actually that bad depending on what its architecture is. A 2ghz celeron will be blown away by a 2ghz ivybridge. It's all about the quality of components rather than the number (except in the case of RAM, timings and all that are negligible.)
Running the server from your house does have downsides. What if your ISP sees the thousands of connections opening and closing? Are you using a VPN to connect to the proxies to prevent your ISP from seeing that you're spamming/scraping/being a bot? You also have to consider that your line may be shared. Even if it advertises 50mbps, it's actually advertised as "up to 50mbps". What if you get kicked from the network, or they have an outage? If what you're doing is critical and requires uptime, a datacenter is the only way to go. Otherwise you could try it on your home connection. Worst case scenario, you can stream true 1080p now lol.

My preferred option is certainly a VPS as I don't have to look after the server or upgrade hardware in a couple of years as and when it is needed and it is handy having remote backups without needing to buy it separately. The cost though is a different matter.
I run all of my programs through proxies (I buy 50 semi-dedicated proxies each month from buyproxies.org). I haven't got round to it but at some stage I will buy hidemyarse too as it isn't expensive so hopefully there isn't a risk of getting my IP blocked. My server is a reasonable spec. It is a couple of years old but they are still selling it. It's a Dell PowerEdge R410 blade server with 2.13 Ghz quad core CPU (from memory, I think there is room for another if I need it) and 8Gb RAM. I haven't asked what the contention ratios are but both Sky and BT advertise up to 70mbps download and estimate that I would actually get 37mbps after giving them my address. I won't know until I get it though.
Do most people just run a few programs through there VPS or do they buy high performance ones?

With a VPS you still need to update the software yourself. Remote backups usually cost extra too.
The server you have is quite powerful. It's allows for dual-cpu and supports hexacore CPUs and up to 128gb ram. Quite nice. You could definitely run that from your home and it would be very viable. You can upgrade later to the max, and throw in some SSDs. Max performance from that. Then if needed you can do colocation for the bandwith if needed. About the bandwith, you won't get an answer from your provider. They provide it as "best effort"/"Up to". They wont tell you how many people are on it, the max load, time frames etc. They'll just tell you the max speed possible if you were the only one using it and the network was running flawlessly.

Most people from BHW use a VPS it seems. What they're doing exactly and the numbers of it I don't know. Everyone is different, so the only way to figure out your needs is to benchmark your server and go from there. I myself, as mentioned before, use a dedicated. Hexacore, 64gb ram, RAID 0 SSDs and a 1gbps(200mbps -> internet) line. No slowdowns, no relying on companies except my host, no overselling, guaranteed resources...
In my eyes, getting a VPS for SEO tools is only a good idea if you're not making money yet, you dont need to process alot of data or if the VPS provides tools pre-installed.
