3 hours downtime last month, good or bad?

I've recently started to use pindom to monitor my shared hosting(bluehost), and the result of the first month is 22 downtimes which is a total of 3 hours. The longest downtime is 1h5m, and mostly it's 5 mins here and there.

Well, I'm not very happy with this result, but would some experienced people please tell me is this acceptable or not compared to other hosting companies?

I don't think that's good, even though the total downtime was just 3 hours. With Hostgator, I think I haven't experienced any downtime yet.

If it wasn't a planned outage - and it seems it wasn't - that's a lot. It's something like 99.5% uptime instead of the standard 99.9%.

That's a lot of downtime, got hosting, that was not in downtime not even for a minute for 3 years.

Yes, that is a lot of downtime. Bluehost have a pretty good reputation, so I'm a bit surprised. Hostgator is good, I've not had any downtime from them. Stay away from webhostingpad, you get more downtime than uptime!

They don't give out any information about it, every time I tried to ask them why they just told me either it's because of "somebody's abusing" or "there's something wrong with your hosting node blah blah..."

I've been with bluehost for about 2 and a half years, and for the first 2 years everything works all right until recently about two months ago I experienced downtime every once a while just on my random surfing/editing my site, and their support just didn't help at all except kept saying we are sorry for your inconvenience then I decided to monitor the hosting myself and till today it's just over a month.

From the result I got, I can see there's always some downtime(5min to 10min here and there) every 3 to 4 days.

I guess I need to transfer to other hosting companies. The good reputation of bluehost is gone to me.

All the people saying their hosting hasn't been down a minute in years are mistaken. Their hosting hasn't been down because they haven't been monitoring it.

There are almost constant updates for all the running services and panels on a server. A good server will run backup routines daily which will slow response times and maybe drop some packets. 3 hrs in a month? I'd say that pretty good hosting.

For those that haven't been down a minute in years I'd be scared to death. Your kernels and software hasn't been updated and the server hasn't been rebooted in years? Impossible to believe but if true you're a sitting duck for hackers.

Anything above 99% is great in my book. I think you're worrying about nothing.

I agree with kvmcable. If your hosting haven't been down for a single minute, i would be really scared. No update nothing? You probably haven't been monitoring it at all or your hosting doesn't give a shit about you as a customer. There should be downtime, but not to much.

So you're saying that there is no possibility of a lost customer conversion?... Websites don't sell to google, they sell to consumers. Downtime = no views by consumers = no purchases by them.


Dump the host and find one with better uptime and informs you of problems.

3 hours downtime is nothing. i see a lot less stable websites still ranking well on google.
