Planning on having article directories pave your way to the pot of gold is planning to fail.

Huge swaths of article directories have been de-indexed. Many others have had their page rank stripped.

Personally, I'd consider web 2.0, but will not be publishing on any article directories in the world of post-panda and post-penguin.

Take the content and post it on your own site/blog first and foremost. Remarkable content is king.

I agree that WEB2.0 have more power these days, but posting unique content in good article directories works too.
I think it's a good way to diversify your backlink profile.

You should count ideamarketers also in the list. As many suggested, submitting same/spun content on hundreds of directories might not be of help but when submitted to top directories, it does help. Moreover, you can not rely only on web 2.0 and diversification in the key today.
