What MatthewWoodward is pointing out is that technically any kind of link building is against Google's guidelines because it is inherently deceptive. Google uses links to determine the popularity of a given website. The theory behind this is that people are linking to valuable content and that they are doing this because they want to share good content. A flaw with this system is that webmasters can create links to their websites making it appear that those sites are useful when they may not be.
So in effect, submitting articles with links to a directory or submitting your website to a directory are technically both frowned upon by Google because they are not natural. So I wouldn't worry too much about it as long as you make it look natural and not deceptive.
That being said, your main focus should be on creating great content and you would be wise to start now if you have long term aspirations for your website. It is becoming more clear that Google is trying to distance itself from using links as a ranking factor for good content. This is evidenced by its startup of Google Plus and Google Authorship programs. They are very close to finding a good way to tie quality content to the authors that produce it. Once they are able to do this consistently and effectively, things like backlink building will no longer be very effective, at least for Google.

I agree with skulquake, other than googles guidelines, it is considered to be white hat if you create these links manually, if you use a software it is considered black hat.
Personally, I would rather use software and build links without wasting my time, as opposed to sitting in front of the computer all day building 20 to 30 links manually.
