small business wants me to help them with their rankings, moderately competitive keywords, how much should i charge them?

Good question... it really depends on your skills/experience and how much you will need to outsource.
For example: if you plan to purchase some backlinks to boost their rankings, you should include that cost in the proposal...

Perhaps you could start with some "package", for example: 1. on-page analysis 2. content management 3. link building campaign etc. for - to say - 10 hours per month (at $25-30 per hour), and go from there.

Moderately competitive - 3 keywords with both on-page and off-page SEO i would charge $250 to $500 a month depending on your skills and budget of your client. (SEO is not a per hour type of work!!)

And some one already on top with that keyword for which client want to be on top then what to do?

It will also depend on the contract period. If you are keeping the contract minimum for 6 months, then $500 seems reasonable. But it all depends on your capability. Its good only if you can deliver the result.

it's totally defend on your business, where are you right now, from where we need to pull in google #100, #500 #1000, such your site is seo friendly or not, there is many factors to start seo in right way.$400 seems reasonable if you get a good results.

Visit those online market places and see what SEO 'experts' are bidding, what those projects are, and who wins the bid for how much and with what skill-sets; get a rough idea. Then think if you could do the same jobs confidently within the given time frame -- if you can, you are worth those winning bids, even more. Else adjust! :D

2 tips.

Outsource EVERYTHING
Charge for all your costs - then your profit on top

You are the co-ordinator, not the work drone

Don't fall into the trap of thinking "I can do this cheap if I do all the work myself". That way leads to frustration and poverty.

Might be worth a peek

If someone is already at top then what's the point of trying to rank, they're already at the top. :(

Someone will ALWAYS be at the top for ANY keyword ANYBODY will EVER want to rank for, genius.

Do you mean that there is already another site owner occupying the top spot and your client wants to beat his site? This is what SEO is all about. You do research, find keywords that really matter and not those that your client thinks are the best for him -- your client may want to go for a keyword that's extremely competitive, or plainly useless for his business.

You come in to guide his thinking and also guide his site towards the top spots (preferably top 5 positions if not top 3, if not the top 1:)). Explain like a pro consultant to him why you want him to target the keywords you, as a genuine SEO consultant, think are important.

Else if he is not bending, outsource to better specialists and...... ..... ..... pray!:)

$400-$500 a month is the average. If you're just starting out and this is just your first or second client, go for $400 because this can lead to more referrals. If you already have a nice portfolio of clients, then $500 should be the minimum. Good luck!

I charge $400-$2000 monthly depending on the sites existing backlinks/reputation.

But I must say I used to charge less. You charge your worth, essentially. If you are great at it, charge high prices because you are worth it.
If you're starting out, charge starting out prices.

outsource the grunt work // use your own special sauce to ensure success of the campaign
provide nice reports with company logo

figure out clients budget / how long they expect to stay with you / difficulty overall of work --- figure out a price

then add $100-$200 to that - because over time things change and the work may become more difficult / take longer / require more outsourcing .... then quote a price.

If it's your first client then you may want to not do that - so you have a client to use as a demonstration/test case for getting new clients.

So depends which way to go from that -- don't ever do it for too cheap you will regret it

Cheers

Nice.. I never see that approach...

So if I never rank an website and never have success with that it will be ok to sell seo services?

A company asking for your help is different than you selling your SEO services and saying you will rank their website.

If I had little experience in SEO and never ranked a website but somebody asked me to do SEO for them, then I would probably do it for free to learn, experiment, test. If I had a long experience in SEO and never ranked a website, I would probably think about changing career.

You clear my all doubt, Thanks a lot.

If you are doing it successfully you have you ask yourself a couple of questions

1. how much is your time worth
2. how much do you have to spend outsourcing
3. how much is overhead
4. how much in capital profits do you want to make

now assume you charge $100 per month and you want to make a model $3k per month to survive. You need 30 clients. Now ask yourself, how much time, backlinking, and overhead does it require to manage 30 clients and is it worth it and is it profitable.

It depends on competition and Time on that site. I would say $400-750 is reasonable for a small business. Are you doing SEO yourself or outsource?
