OP, how do you go about getting people to let you guest post?

The best converting way is to send them emails but not from a script. Write each email individually. That way, you will get more reply's.

So the way to go for the gold in 2012 is:

GUEST POSTING
+ Add many quality articles(say the same shit in your way) on the promoted site (1$ per article if you know where to search)
+ Add many quality articles on the Web 2.0 site's who where made only for one site to promote
+ Facebook: join as many groups in your niche, help people, talk with them, offer them value, gather their emails, likes and shares (don't buy like's), organize contests in exchange of like's, shares and emails and with additional accounts+the main account post every day to stay under the radar
+ Onlywire or another similar service for the rest of social sites
+ I think it's still good to post only quality articles on article directories manually
+ Make on the site's sidebar an optin form with a hot image to offer them something valuable in exchange of emails
+ Participate in forums (normal people account not site name and don't spam)
+ Manual and relevant blog comments
+ I think edu/gov/wiki backlinks are still good if done right
+ Social bookmarks with Social Bomber and Deathbycaptchas account (8$ for 5000 captcha's - cheaper than fiverr)
+ Expand your/client's brand and act "like a boss"
+ No more tools (just a few of them)
+ Content, content, content
+ Allways invest half of profits
+ Automate/outsource

Building your own blogs to promote your website might get by with being gray hat simply because he said he uses unique content on those blogs. So essentially, he is giving google related, unique content about his niche. Google is all about content, and one link for an article that is unique (and might be considered useful) wouldn't be a bad thing.

Guest posting can be seen as marketing your website to another niche related blog for direct traffic from that blog, so that is promotion - can slip by as whitehat.

For the manual blog comments, if he uses a name instead of anchor, every blogger does this, no one ever had an issue with that.

Simplified, basically it's spreading misinformation in Google; leaving intentional footprints and let them track it.

Instead of posting to 50 random Web 2.0s, you post to 10 networks of 5 Web 2.0s each for your Tier 1 that belong to the same 'user'.

Don't just link to your website, your website has a powerful online presence which notifies Google that you are doing Public Relations, that you are spreading your message.

It's rather simple, just more work.

The post is with this method is that all the Web 2.0s are linked to a user. Not a single Tier one link is an isolated Web 2.0, it's supposed to be a network for each major backlink which works better for both PageRank flow and contextual content. It's not 'posting to Web 2.0s sites', the link structure is more important then a Web 2.0 itself. In fact, Google + is literally the most important tool for this method because it links all the Web 2.0s together for each power user.

Exactly, and the most important take away for people to understand is how complex the term "online presence" can be. Google indexes and rank sites/pages based upon many indicators. What online presence those properties has contributes greatly depending on how saturated the niche is. If you've got big time players who have a big presence spread all around the net, you'll have some catching up to do.

Here's a case in point: I have one client who struggled for a long time to get their local cake shop to the top of the serps in their locality. Older websites who had a ton of facebook likes, and twitter postings dominated that market. Needless to say, we quickly instituted an "online presence" blast which made her site jump, and maintain her new top 3 ranking. This stuff works.

^ Exactly. Some people (and I'm only my speaking from my perception) working on creating unique (or the appearance of unique content but they keep forgetting that a stand alone piece of content isn't worth much without a frame of reference.

I would take the Pepsi challenge on writing a 300 word response piece with ~7 comments that would provide better link juice than a 1000 word article in isolation.

No, no, no... Using Fiverr on a client's site? If you don't know how to do SEO and are taking on clients @ $50 you shouldn't be doing SEO in the first place.. I'll be the bad guy here but I'm telling you the truth.

I think that Black hat is not worth it, in order to succeed in SEO it takes time and work. Sure you may get instant traffic, but it will simply not work in the long run.
