This should be a sticky: Do NOT use Google Disavow Tool

It could be true that G wants to force more small website owners to use AdWords, but that's just a theory.

I am also not convinced about that, but it is pretty obvious that the past few updates have been all about maximizing THEIR earnings - would there be any other reason for all those page 1 YouTube videos? I can see how they can be relevant in some cases, but yet again, you hardly ever see page 1 videos from all the other video sharing sites.

And that's not what really pisses me off - after all, they are a business and should do their best to turn good profits, but they should stop spinning lies such as "play by our rules and you will get right there on top of the Se listing and make crapload of money."

I dare anyone to start building a 100% white hat site right now, making sure that only super hot, original content is added, the site is well optimized, and then report their earnings a year from now. Oh, yeah, don't forget NOT to build any backlinks, because that is "really bad" and lets see how far that gets you. My guess, after spending thousands on content and countless hours updating the site, you should start earning $3-4 per month a year from now...

We can't predict anything from google side. We have to wait an watch. Some may upload .edu or .gov domains in disavow tool, if your assumption is correct, then google blacklist most of the university or governmental domains. is like that?
I am sure high authority sites are afforded a lot of protection, just as you cannot perform neg SEO on amazon for example. However, many gov/edu sites are autoapprove and are targets of link spammers for their perceived authority as a result of their tld. If enough people submit links on these domains to the disavow tool, then yes they would probably be blacklisted. Not blacklisted in the sense that the gov/edu's site would go down in rankings, rather that any links from that site would be devalued.

Exactly, that's why BH is necessary. But as time goes by, this BH SEO section of BHW has had to turn into a more white hat forum. Of course strictly speaking any link building on purpose is black hat, but we don't see as many posts about blasting with Xrumer, SB, AMR or whatever anymore. Making automated link building succeed is what offered such a good ROI for SEO for a lot of people on this forum. Now, only the highest quality links are recommended, but the problem with high quality links is that they are very expensive, relative to those made by automated means. And even if you build those high quality links, you're only a negative SEO campaign away from being penalized through no fault of your own (either by traditional blasting or now via the disavow tool). A high quality link may be high quality, but if it's reported by enough users via the disavow tool, it may still be dangerous to have it. Pandora's box does seem to be opened, G is trying to clean up a huge mess but in doing so has created a new host of problems.

They may even lose traffic.

Some of you people really border on clinical paranoia. I would seriously seek professional help and get yourselves on some medication. I'm constantly seeing threads about "evil google", "google taking over the world" "google stealing your data".

Google are a company trying to make profit, they're not a group of crazy cultists who thrive on destruction.

Everything you see you're interpreting as sinister. I'm not joking when I say that it's borderline clinical paranoia.

Do you know what I see as a level-headed businessman with an understanding of how companies operate?

I see a company who are facing changing times with the increase in mobile advertisers and the decrease in regular web advertisers who are making some radical changes to maintain growth going forward. They've been losing market share for a while now and it's something that they're trying to slow down and potentially reverse.

With that in mind Penguin was about taking some drastic measures to reduce spammy sites and provide a better user experience so they can start to regain market share.

However, they screwed up and ended up with a mess on their hands. They were probably toying with the idea of a disavow tool ever since bing released one (http://www.bing.com/community/site_blogs/b/webmaster/archive/2012/06/27/disavow-links-you-don-t-trust.aspx) and it's likely they had a team working on it for a potential release along side penguin.

My opinion is that they probably weren't 100% sure whether or not to push out their own disavow, but when things got messed up so badly with utter garbage ranking for terms like 'viagra' they decided they would roll it out to help fix the damage.

What the hell do you people think happens in their board meetings? Do you seriously think they decided "Hm, let's copy bing's disavow tool, except instead of the purpose being to protect against negative seo, what we'll do is use it to find out what bad links are!"

Do you think Google don't already know what bad links are? Do you think they need US to tell them? Jeeez..

Out of all the millions upon millions of sites that are going to be submitted across the entire network, you think having a few blog networks in there is going to be damaging?

Do you think they just add every site to a "PENALIZE" list if someone disavows?

Maybe you think if X number of people disavow a link then they might add to it to "PENALIZE". If so it would have to be a pretty large number so a few blog networks in there is hardly going to make any difference.

The only thing Google will potentially do is create some sort of algorithm to analyse the sites in the disavow that integrates with their existing algorithms for determining low quality links.

This whole conspiracy theory nonsense is just utterly embarrassing. I don't know what's happened lately at bhw, but it feels like I'm on some 'alternative' forum full of tinfoil-hat lunatics.

This is suppose to be a forum full of intelligent business people.

Google would have to be pretty retarded to do something as stupid as that.

"Yeah, let's just completely forget our existing algorithms and instead we'll just use a really super-simple system where if X number of people disavow a link we'll blacklist that site and provide a penalty for sites it links to"

I'm embarrassed for anyone that thinks that's a good way for a search engine to rank sites.

Im afraid you are right. This tool seems fishy, and i think this gives G extra power with a lot of info that was unavailable to it before. Disavow could cause a chain reaction that could have the most negative consecuences for us all.

Very true. Google's number one motive: Make money! - just like any business. With their market share dropping, mobile traffic increasing, and ppc revenue down they had to do something.

Their updates are trying to accomplish one thing: deliver better results and clean up their "product"

My brother works for one of the largest trading firms in a very high position- he said that yesterday you would have thought the world was ending with the google stock drop. Trust me, I have a feeling now we will see even more refreshes, updates, etc - Google will not lay over and take it - they will tweek, re-tweek until they have it right.

Google has never been a friend of SEO's, so really don't seem them to come and help out SEO's! I think they are just building a database of sites which are easy targets for links and link networks.

When was the last time google actually did something in order to help average joe with his average online business? - never, so why this tool would be with any other intention?!. Tricking webmasters into rating each other.
I imagine google's already trolling while receiving nice flow of important data. Even tho some of us will not use this shitty tool, some will.

BlueTurtle, I agree that G is a business all about profits. They are not intentionally trying to be 'evil', e.g. when they ruin small businesses who depend on rankings. As I said, you would have been called paranoid if you had suggested an update as extreme as Penguin, and all that it entailed, before it happened. When it comes to profits, Google is ruthless. BH SEOs are the enemies of Google and it is a war of strategy between us and them. Make no mistake, it is a war. We seek to manipulate our way through their algorithms, they seek to punish those who engage in such manipulation as it is a threat to their profits. They will be unforgiving when it comes to the quality of their search results. BHers like us are the last people they want to see at the top, and they will do whatever it takes to remove BH sites from the first pages. Of course they won't abandon their algorithm that they have worked so hard on, but the disavow tool is another source of information at their disposal that they will make use of to further their interests and conserve their profits.

There's your problem right there.. Why would you think any company is out to "help" the average joe?

If the average joe wants help he can help himself.

My company doesn't help the average joe either. I didn't go into business to help out a bunch of strangers. Why would Google?

That's exactly what Romeo said; he said that Google never helps the average joe; he never implied that he expected Google to do so.

No, Google is not intentionally trying to screw the average person or small businesses, but the effect of its actions have been to ruin a lot of businesses. True, these businesses unwisely depended on Google search for their income, but no rational person could have expected such drastic, ruthless algorithm changes in such a small space of time. In that case, it might have been better that they had put on their "tin foil hats".

so in other words you'r saying google cares about giant media monsters and not about small business. could not agree more :) only thing they care about is filling bank accounts, and this is achievable by playing with big guys

They don't "care" about anything. They're a corporation.

Your anthropomorphising them. All businesses have a primary goal to grow and make profit. This isn't 'evil', it's business.

If you had a client paying you $1mil/mo and another 10 clients paying you $1k/mo, who would you give your attention to?

They are not a charity.

business is business, it;s all about profits, I a agree with that, however growing your profits by shattering others - another (not nice) story

and please don't say that Goo0gle destroys black hat based online business. I know many guys who never heard about black hat seo and lost their business.

Shattering others? It's their own fault for building their business relying on a current implementation of a search algorithm.

Google aren't there to provide a free place for businesses to advertise. They exist to provide the best possible user experience, which in return guarantees a large amount of advertisers all competing and driving the bid price up.

I don't understand how you can blame Google for small businesses losing their rankings. TOUGH! That's life! Most businesses fail. If you're so concerned then by all means go and start a charitable organization that provides capital to failing businesses. lol.

Um, Google exists. That alone is a massive help to an enormous number of businesses. Where would we be without them?

I respect your opinion, but it is complete nonsense.

Why even bother reposting this again if it's "not for discussion"? Stop rep whoring.
What's the deal with the influx of tards recently... This was not a "repost" of any thread. There have been no explicit threads whose sole purpose is to warn people not to use this tool, which is entirely necessary. Anyone with any experience in SEO will know what will happen if everyone does. But hey, if you're retarded enough to fuck it up for yourself and everyone else, then go ahead. The part that is not for discussion is the fact that you should not use it and the reason why. I care about the numbers in my bank account, not my rep count on an online forum. I warn people in BHW because the majority are cool guys that I want to succeed. But occasionally there are tards like you who reason that I posted this thread simply to increase my online rep, why don't you quit IM and become a detective because you're an absolute genius at determining a person's motivation for his actions. :-O

Man, you're touchy.

Literally second post.

Don't get high and mighty on semantics - plenty of warning in those threads not to use it. This is a repost, simple as.

As for the rest of your rant, there's no need to get started.
