Google misses earning expectations! Rejoice!

You are exactly right... Looks like GOOGLE is paying him for it.. But the fact is fact... Webmaster these days hate google as they piss off all the hard work even its white hat today.. throw one fine update they get n say from now its black hat. Thats ridiculous. I agree we need to evolve with time, that doent give Google authority to ban a site overnight.

By all means I am not sticking up for what google is doing, but if a webmaster designs a site that does not give the consumer what they thought they were getting, then google should take them down.

I am not saying if I could make a site that generated me income but gave nothing of use to the consumer I wouldnt, but at the same time, if I did that, and google took me down, I would accept it.

just like with YT vids, you see the thumbnail and the vid as nothing to do with it, but it has millions of views, is that right and fair? nope, and the web would be a better place w/o such things even if I would do them too, if I could.

I read thru the entire thread..

And most posters in this thread seem to be of the same state of mind and are in agreement..

And then theres Turtle throwing up walls of text, dissecting every post and just fighting viciously in defence of
what most here agree on..

Ahahahahah :)

Because he likes to argue? May be..

Or may be it's something else..

I have a special keyboard that gives me +10 to Wall of Text with a 15% increased chance of critical hit.

Kinda reminds of the riot cop that will justify beating down protesters defending the corrupt bankers and politicians..

Hahahaha @ corrupt bankers. No one's corrupt, we're all just trying to make money. The bankers are no different than the unemployed. 1 little turning point in life and the banker could have been the unemployed bum and the unemployed bum could have been the banker. People are people.

It's all just business at the end of the day. I'm just a neutral party who understands the economics and business side of things and doesn't ascribe to the conspiracies and "blame culture".

made my day, think i just felt glorious orgasm lasting for 15 minutes

Ok Smarty Turtle :) what do you say about this:

Facts: Google destroyed thousands of small businesses this year, thousands of people lost their jobs.*
(Those who relied on serp position, seo, link building etc)

People are using google serps as an environment where they grow websites, businesses.
If a website goes from #1 to #1000 in one day, i don't feel it's the webmaster's fault, it feels like a 100000% inflation rate rise in one day.

When they penalize a website, they punish real people!

What do I say about this? I've said it already really..

It's all just down to the "boohoo blame culture". I say too bad.

If you're going to build a business that relies 100% on what is essentially a listing on another company's web site then you have to accept that your entire business can be crushed over night.

Google is not a government public service. It's not there to help businesses, support economic growth, help struggling small businesses or make blackhatters money.

They are a business. They built the search engine, they grew it and we started using it. If they want to modify how they rank sites that's their prerogative.

That's like a business who advertises solely on a radio station, then when the radio station decides it doesn't want that type of business advertising it starts calling them evil, saying they've destroyed their business.

I find this whole thing utterly ridiculous. It's like a bunch of little spoiled brats who think they're entitled to something. "oh, boohoo, I created good content and now google got rid of me. I should be making the big bucks because I spent a bit of time writing what I think users want! google is evil".. Get a grip.

Just because many of you finally, after years of spamming the hell out of your duplicate content xrummer spammed autoblogs, have decided to make a decent site doesn't mean you're automatically entitled to page 1 on google.

This whole 'they punish real people' stuff is nonsense. Someone's always ranking and someone's always not ranking. This has always been the way.

For years good sites were relegated to page 2+ while the xrumer spammed sites enjoyed dominance.

Let's look at a search time "wow priest guide"

http://www.wowwiki.com/Priest is number 1. That's a great site. They're not getting "punished"

For a while there google was returning junk, but they seem to have gotten their act together again and we're getting good, relevant results once more. Just because YOUR site isn't ranking doesn't mean google are evil.

What do you want them to do? Remove the sites on page 1 and put yours in? Then what about the people who own those? Oh, who cares, right? "Let's not think about them. As long as I'm number 1 that's all I care about."

Google still made lots of money and the shares will grow back, BlueTurtle is pretty much right, google doesn't owe to us or small business a dime but if you think about it lots of business and people have jobs due to Google.. on a side note one of the reasons google shares failed because the normal traffic dropped and phone traffic increased but the average price for a phone ad is 50% of an normal one.

Blueturtle: The reality is you don't know much about business, finance or economics so it's easier for you to just say "You don't get it, but I won't explain why"

blueturtle, you should drop this strawman thing and start making an argument instead of attacking the opponent.

Blueturtle: The serps are not some neutral playground. THEY ARE OWNED BY GOOGLE. You can't "dominate" what you own. YOU OWN IT! I can't make this any simpler.

No they aren't. They own the domain and the algos, but other companies own content. Google rehashes OTHER PEOLPLE'S CONTENT.

Blueturtle: Companies buy up each other so they can do precisely this! It's called synergy.

It's called differently, but let's just say that this only works until a company controls a large portion of an industry. After which anti-monopoly laws kick in. In fact people go to jail for conspiracy to control the market.

And your quote about monopoly is short and from a poor source. You need to look further into this, a monopoly doesn't have to control ENTIRE market singlehandedly, there's also oligopoly which is what we have (Google + Bing =95%). You should start reading more about US Anti-Trust laws:
Wiki United_States_antitrust_law

Does this sound like Google:
Price Fixing ("black box" adwords bidding, prices rigged up based on conversion data from Urchin / Google analytics)
Bid Rigging (above)

FYI.Standard Oil, a monopoly (which is now being put together agian, but it is offtopic) had 64% market share when it was broken up into smaller companies in 1911 (and had as high as 70% in 1906). Does this sound familiar?

blueturtle, you should drop this strawman thing and start making an argument instead of attacking the opponent.

You don't think my pages and pages of text constitute an argument, no? 98% of what I wrote is argument.

You have to point out a straw-man because well, it's a straw-man. You can't argue against a straw-man. Example:

"Apples are a fruit"

"No, cars are made of metal"

That's basically the replies I was getting.

No they aren't. They own the domain and the algos, but other companies own content. Google rehashes OTHER PEOLPLE'S CONTENT.

That line of reasoning hacks me off to be honest. It's so contradictory.

You're all furious because Google is extremely volatile just now, even being volatile towards what you consider to be good sites.(good=subjective)

Now bearing that in mind, do you think it makes sense to take a line of argument where you accuse Google of rehashing other people's content?

That is absurd. One minute you're moaning that you were booted off page 1, now you're moaning that Google is rehashing your content. Make up your mind, do you want to be on page 1 or do you want Google to stop violating your rights? How can you both be on page 1 and not have them display your content? It doesn't make any sense.

What makes these even more absurd is that you have a little thing called robots.txt which allows you to block googlebot. No one's forcing you to have your content listed on the front page of Google and get you thousands of visitors. You're completely free to keep all your content private.

It's just so silly on multiple levels. Google are sending you high quality traffic and now you're moaning about them re-hashing your content? wtf?

Do you want them to both send you traffic and pay YOU per click or something? That makes a lot of sense!

So, which is it. You clearly are unhappy with Google rehashing other people's content, so what should they do to make it right in your eyes?

It's called differently, but let's just say that this only works until a company controls a large portion of an industry. After which anti-monopoly laws kick in. In fact people go to jail for conspiracy to control the market.

"It's called differently"? Uh, you actually think I was saying "acquisitions" is called "synergy"? It's awfully difficult to get my point across if your reading comprehension isn't up to par. You need to understand context

I said

"If I own a trucking company I can transport whatever in the hell I want to transport. If I want to transport goods for my other 10 companies at a 90% discount and charge everyone else a premium of 1000% then guess what, I can do that because it's my company.

This is STANDARD BUSINESS PRACTICE. Companies buy up each other so they can do precisely this! It's called synergy. "

You don't actually know what synergy is, do you? You quite clearly think I mistakenly called the act of buying up new businesses 'synergy' instead of 'acquisitions'.

And your quote about monopoly is short and from a poor source. You need to look further into this, a monopoly doesn't have to control ENTIRE market singlehandedly, there's also oligopoly which is what we have (Google + Bing =95%). You should start reading more about US Anti-Trust laws:

I quoted wikipedia, investopedia and 2 other sites. Please try to read over what I write carefully, this is the 2nd time your reading comprehension has let you down. This is not a personal insult btw, it just makes it difficult for me to discuss this with you if you don't read what I say more carefully.

I went into great detail about what a monopoly would be with a smaller market share. I won't repeat myself. If you can't understand my reasoning then that's not my problem.

Basically you say don't rely on Google. Ok I get it.
I'm just saying I haven't seen same hate against seo from Bing & Yahoo.

For example Bing is not penalizing EMDs or other small websites. This proves there are better ways to deal with SEOs instead of crushing them.

I'm not yet convinced is that a bad idea to rely on search engines & SEO.
Afterall some companies invested millions of $ in this industry, especially companies listed here
http://digitalmarketingdepot.com/research_report/enterprise-seo-tools-the-marketers-guide

I'm sure you can see the connection between google & content & people & seos (black hats or white craps) but you don't take this into account from a business point of view, which is interesting and I will think more at this. Best of luck mate!

What a load of utter mince. I've really lost all respect for you with some of your recent comments. The one above about Google deliberately lowering profits to appease the FTC is just beyond words.

Then you said Google should pay webmasters royalties.. I'm not even going to comment on why that's ridiculous.

Now you're just talking nonsense about distribution channels. What you're saying doesn't make sense. Google didn't just come into existence with a market share. They started off as a small company with 0 market share and grew. Every company in existence has a 'distribution channel'. You're making out Google has some unfair edge which other companies don't have.

You seriously don't understand how business works and this is the fundamental problem. I don't think you've got any real world business experience based on what you're saying.

EVERY company expands through its area of influence/distribution channels. Why do you think this is an unfair thing? If I own a race track and decide I'm going to start another company selling thrill rides in race cars then I'm going to promote that company at my race track and push it on race days.

If you have 50% of the search results for 'weight loss' then that IS a monopoly. Distribution channels have NOTHING to do with it. Your competitor is not Google!! What does Google owning the distribution channel have to do with that at all? That's like saying if you go to a trade show then the organizers of the trade show have an unfair advantage over you because they own the distribution channel. It's ludicrous and entirely nonsensical.

So and how long are you working for Google?

So and how long are you working for Google?

If you think a company with a market capitalization of around $222 billion are interested in what a few kids on a forum have to say then you're in for a rude awakening when you hit the real world and leave your parents' basement.

Cat amongst the pigeons time!!
http://searchenginewatch.com/article/2214849/Googles-Knowledge-Graph-Implications-for-Search-SEO

Recently, Matt Cutts delivered the opening keynote for SES San Francisco (August 2012) where he clearly mentioned that one of the key focuses for Google is to move away from being a search engine and focus on becoming a knowledge engine. Google is so committed to this that Google's Search Quality team has been renamed to Google's Knowledge Team.

Google has been working hard on creating the vast database of structured knowledge that powers the features. Today, the Knowledge Graph database holds information about 500 million people, places, and things. More importantly, though, it also indexes over 3.5 billion defining attributes and connections between these items. Google's algorithms have access to this structured data. And, importantly, so do you!

There is a hell of a difference between listing a page of text results with the description tags allowing users to best choose the page which matches their query than displaying rich snippets, images and video which is scraped from other pages.

Why when google go down this road and they already are, should we not consider them as 'nasty little scapers' and content thieves? Discuss

Google does not really have any content other than their own hosted pages/forums ect. Anything else they get from other sites.

Its a business technique nothing else. they have increased their basic earning to 11 million Dollar in a year. So Some drop is nothing for them. They will recover it within this year I think.

i want to say BlueTurtle got it right.

SEO should never be considered as your main income source. The moment you realized you relied on Google traffic to make sales, that's the moment you should try as hard as you can to get another income source.

I have had time (more than a year and half) when I was ranked #1 in some medium competitive keywords with just small affiliate sites. The bad day came when Google made their updates and my sites gone from JUST #1 to #3-20 overnight. I lost half of my earnings. That's freakin insane! Not to mention when I was thrown away to outside top 100. That was even more heartbreaking.

I realized that I can't just rely on SEO and i was tired working 8 hours a day for SEO. I know it worked but a real business should never be dependent on another company policy. It's just stupid.

You can do media buys to promote your branded site, or use offline marketing, or whatever, but believe me these things work way better than SEO in long run (as long as you got a good product). Personally im pretty sure offline/online combination work best for promoting a e-commerce site.

the conclusion is, nobody should ever depend their business on SEO. They should do SEO, of course, to make their sites more visible, but they should never focus on SEO alone.

Yup, spot on, buddy. You understood me perfectly.

The rest think I'm 'defending Google' and Matt Cutts(Who, this is the first time I even mention him). The reality is it's deluded to think any 1 person or company owes you *anything*. But if I'm pro-Google for saying they don't owe you anything then so be it.

8% sounds good at the start, but do you think its going to work for long?? Google is coming up again within no time, people have got addicted to use Google, even if they don't want to they eventually return to Google!! agree it or not!!
