So I had a micro niche site that got hit by Penguin a few months back in May, but before then it was on average receiving about 250 visits a day. The visits were from a long-tail keyword related around a main keyword (which I could never rank for, too difficult).

The site is technically still way out in the SERPs where no one goes, but one picture from my site is on the first row of pictures in Google for two versions of the main keyword, for a total number of searches of about 5,000 per day (exact match). It must have moved up there in the past few days because just recently I've been getting 80 to 100 visits just from that image being on the top row of the IMAGES page, not even in the regular search results. I never did any back linking to the exact image URL, just the pages of the site, but somehow it's up there with the big boys and I've been receiving a nice stream of traffic from it.

Maybe some people already know this, but now with Google doing major changes to sites and probably just making everything worse, you could try and mix it up and rank some images for some high profile terms. Seemed to work for me when I wasn't even trying so it can't be that difficult :)

yes one of my newer blogs ONLY gets image traffic...about 40 UV a day and its in oblivion in standard search results lol

Sounds intr. keep us updated if you find a way to scale this up.

What are some tips to rank an image?

Honestly, I just sent backlinks to the page that had the image on it and the image is keyword optimized, but not over the top. I'll definitely keep you guys updated with any progress or any way to actually scale it up. It's just an interesting observation from one of my sites today :)

I have a site that was exploding, but then got slammed and has been slammed over and over but image traffic isn't affected so yeah I've seen the same thing.

As far as I have experienced (I am getting about 500 visits from image search daily/used to get 5 times more) it is almost impossible to convert it since people are just looking to 'borrow' your pics. The only traffic that used to convert at at least 0.001% for me was 'before and after pictures' for some dietary supplements...

Actually, with this traffic, my bounce rate is now lower than ever, the pages visited are up and the average duration is much higher than normal. It's almost like this image traffic is better for my site, BUT there's Adsense and I only have a 0.33% CTR :(

That's about average for the site though so I'm not really worried. And I know, that's a TERRIBLE CTR, but I think it's the niche my site is in.

I've been getting image searches since I made my amazon site, But I don't none of it ever converted. Of course my niche isn't evergreen, it's not something you need everyday so I expect lower conversions.

But I've been meaning to make some other sites image optimized to see how well it converts for me. Another thing I noticed is that most of the traffic from image searches are people from different countries.

Actually, yesterday i have created thread about how to convert image traffic better

use search button as not sure if i can paste links here
