learn to use Apache's HttpClient, its somewhat the (lamer.. Yes i know) counterpart to requests in Python if you ever used it.

Selenium could be useful to pick up.. But i find that approach way too bulky and bloated for almost everything unless you are working with a complete JS and AJAX dependant website.
