Looking for register 2000 .COM domains

From my understanding, the actual cost to register a domain name for the registrar is quite low (they pay less than a dollar to ICANN). As such, it would appear to me that a registrar would be willing to register thousands of domain names at a substantially reduced price since there would be very limited customer support or admin load related to each domain. I did some research to determining the costs to become a registrar myself but ICANN charges $180K so that is not feasible for me. I am willing to consider "outside the box" solutions if you can think of any.

I did some research and found the following listing that shows approximately how many .com some of the larger registrars are providing service for. It appears that godaddy.com is the leader by far.

Also, it turns out that there is a fee that I was unaware. Apparently verisign charges a fee for registry services on .COM. In 2012 that fee appears to be $7.85 per domain. The ICANN fee is $0.18 per domain. Added together the total would be $8.03. Based on that information it appears that anyone charging over $8.03 will be selling below cost.


With available discounts Godaddy charges $8.19 for bulk registration. As such they are only earning $0.16 above cost to provide the service which will result in only $320 for registering 2000 domains. This makes me think that I am NOT going to find a better deal on domain registration.

As such, I would also be interested in registering the domain names very cheap at a lower service registrar and then transferring them to a quality service once I am ready on the sales side. I have a long list of domains that I would like to register (beyond 2000) so if the price is lower I will be able to register more.

I`m looking for the CHEAPEST possible solution!
Let me know your BEST solution.

Many of the domains are similar and I want to register them all close to the same date. As such, godaddy will be able to recognize that they are all related to the same purchaser. At that point they could either charge full price or cancel the registrations. Further, it would be nice to keep them all under the same account. This provides the ability to make group changes to the DNS across many domains instead of one domain at a time.

You might be able to find a registrar that is willing to do it pretty much at cost, just because they'll be able to gouge you next time around when you to go renew them. As you're unlikely to move them all to a new registrar, most registrars are willing to sacrifice profits in the first year.

well, you can check resellerclub domain reseller option.
buy a reseller account for yourself, and register all your domains for 7.99 . this will save you hundreds of dollars, and also, when you renew your domains next year, you will have to pay atmost 8.89 /domain.

All Registrars pay the exact same rate for Domains from their respected Registries. .com/.net's Registry is VeriSign. VeriSign sets the price for these Domains. ICANN charges each Registrar a yearly fee + .20 per Domain reg/renewal.

VeriSign is charging, this has been changing yearly with price increases, currently $7.85 for .coms and $5.86 for .nets. Now add .20 cents to each and you get the exact cost a Registrar is paying for a Domain reg/renewal.

Whenever a Registrar is offering Domains below this cost it's called a "loss leader". Basically they're selling at a loss but usually make it up on up-sells. Wiki "loss leader" for a longer explanation as to why this is done.

In these cases they will give you "at cost" or slightly below it, taking a loss to get you to transfer your portfolio over. They make their profit when you renew, they bank on you maintaining your inventory + not jumping ship. Not to mention in some cases they'll charge for you privacy, etc.

That's mad. What are you going to do with all of them? You also need a virtual or a dedicated server to host all of the websites.

Most registrars will put you in touch with a sales rep that will help you with bulk purchases. The cost should be significantly lower for that many domains.
