After this huge niche site plague... how many people are still wanting to set up new niche sites? Is this where most just look into something else? Or are you all pumped up for a better tactical approach for ranking?

Good methods (blackhat or whitehat) working fine.

I've had improvements across the board to every site but one (and that's stayed the same) serps up, visitors up, income up.
Every time Panda, Penguin. EMD slap, rank variation whatever algo runs... my sites improve as do the sites of many others here on BHW.

My thought is that this all needs some time to settle. EMDs that have been hit now might be lost forever (highly doubtable though) but in 1 or 2 months we can start over with fresh ones. But you never know with Google so lets just hope for the best

I know it's the same music again, and I realized that writing this thread. But... my perspective is that blackhat SEO has been pretty refined already, link pyramids, web 2 dripping, anchor diversity optimization, content deoptimization and quality improvement, backlink type diversity, and more tactics... And yet the damage is HUGE. There is a certain point where even the tougher ones get discouraged to try again. And I'm wondering if we're near that point..

Note that I also have a certain interest in how this market will do, considering I'm creating some SEO tools to sell.

People have very different definitions of high quality sites - it's amazing when you look at a 10 page MFA and the owner calls it high quality because he uses a premium theme and the articles are 600 words instead of 300.....

Actually the same as an authority site but on a smaller subject. I make sure that I provide something useful for my visitors so I don't get it what went wrong? What else can I do to make it googles standard of 'high quality'?

It certainly sounds like you're doing all of the things that people who are selling you stuff say you should do, which are probably serving as spam signals as opposed to the link diversity you wanted. But that's another thread.

In the end, it is about content, the quality of that content, the quantity of that content, and whether or not that content can better answer a query than another site that is technically more authoritative than yours. It is also about your site's backlink profile vs. the backlink profile of the sites that now appear on page one for your keys. Regrading the former, and if I'm reading your post correctly, you have a site with 6 articles: 'Quality' is often determined in the aggregate, then compared and contrasted with other metrics. Short version: you need more articles -- algorithms are math; ergo, even 'quality' is determined by quantity in most instances. As regards the latter, if you are committed to the domain, you must analyze the backlink profiles of the top 10 winners, throw out any anomalies (they will be there, probably around 20% of the top 10, actually) and replicate their approach, if it is, if fact, replicable.

This is what you do to set up your site initially. Also make sure the quality is HIGH and not some cheap $5 article or copied content or created using one of those re-writter software. Then every week you need to add a new post at least once a week and keep building links slowing so the site is growing at a steady pace with high quality content and backlinks. This is what i do and my rankings rose overall during the last update. Just putting together a 5x500 + 1 x 1000 MNS and then do nothing for months may be considered a low quality website.

And I don't think SEO is dead.. these fears come up after every big update.. and these updates are never going to end. It's up to us to adapt with the changes and to push on.

The best way to insulate yourself from these big changes is to build/buy a couple of very strong sites.. sites that conform to the point that Matt Cutts would jizz his pants over. Let those sites keep your income steady while having fun experimenting with new and different systems.
