So I have a site based on a certain type of addiction, its relatively small with 20 articles, each on a different subject/keyword. All were ranking bottom of Page 1 for their respective keywords. All the articles I wrote personally from my own knowledge of the topics with minor research. Each page has an article of about 300-400 words spanning 3-4 paragraphs and low keyword density of just over 1%.

Now, since it got hit by the EMD "Weather Report", I have some things I need advice on.

1.) Should I keep the site and just create new content
2.) Create a new site with a broad match domain and 301 each page over to a new domains according pages with new original content
3.) Get a new domain, create all new original content and start the link building process from scratch?

I really don't want to do #3 because I've spent about $500 on Link Building across all the keywords.

Thanks, your expertise is greatly appreciated.

Id advise to wait a little while see what others suggest over the next week or so. The problem is there may have been a panda or penguin update at the same time I don't think this latest algo was just about EMDs as a number of non EMDs were hit too. I made a rash decision and have 301 redirected a site which is probably a mistake if this update was more the just about EMDs as the penalty will just probably be passed over to the new domain. So sit it out for a week or so is my best advice

The problem is that cookie cutter EMDs just aren't gonna cut it anymore, so you have several options.

1. Build this site out to be an authority site
2. Build a new authority site

To be honest the first one is a bit risky, theres talk going on that the EMD algorithm was built to target EMDs that aren't .com and have low search volume. It makes sense as often times a "brand" won't be a keyword with love SV and be on something other than a .com

If you have the ability I'd do both, build the current website out with more content, more quality links, and see if you can have it bounce back. While at the same time building out an entirely new domain that's "brandable" around the niche you are in. That way you can get one of them back in and potentially even two sites dominating the serps at some point.

I purchased a brandable aged domain in GoDaddy auction last night which I'm going to start building as a just in case option.

So if the EMD that got hit were to never bounce back, should I 301 to the new site, or backlink to the new site from the EMD site.

Thanks!

Don't do a 301 as that will pass the negative ranking on to the new site. In regards to this being EMD its definitely much bigger than that. It also targets larger sites with thousands of pages.

This update, just like almost every other update is based on links. The sites of mine that have been punished are on a variety of platforms. Some are EMD while others are larger forum based sites. My crappy EMD sites were actually hit the least and I believe that's due to the fact that they had a large and diverse backlink profile. By contrast, my "good" authority sites only have a few links that I created, with a relatively low anchor diversity.

I'm thinking this update has A LOT to do with anchor diversity.
