*Google Slapped today?* Let's figure out why certain sites got slapped!

Now, obviously there has been a lot noise of website's getting slapped by the big G today/last night etc..

I thought with so many websites getting slapped this thread could help figure out what the new update was actually about.

Matt cutts mentioned in a tweet that this was a small EMD change and low quality EMD'S would be targeted.

Now, reading many threads on different internet marking forums, it seems this update has not only hit certain EMD'S it's also hit NON-EMD'S.

We all no, that matt cutts has not always been a truth teller and tries to mis-direct what google really wants.

I have seen my own site NOT get slapped and my sites all have 100+s of pages so, different people are getting effected in different ways, time to try and find out.


Therefore if your site got hit today post below your stats :


1. Your domain : EMD or Non-EMD?

2. How many indexed pages did the site have?

3: did you get slapped, Yes or no?

4: still in big G? still there? completely disappeared?

Domain 1 interests me, specially having that amount of pages.


Gone through just over 100 sites today and found only 5 that got hit.

All these 5 had less then 30 articles.

All those that had a lot more articles have stayed in it's position or shot up ranks.

At this moment in time, i don't believe it was a EMD was culprit for this update. I believe this was something different.

3 non-EMD sites (2 were new with relatively modest, yet awesome backlinks from structures most SEOers couldn't even create going to them)

Scratch that, I think Google's still tweaking this update. I took a look at the serps for that keyword again and they are completely different from this morning. Domain 1 is back and ranking higher and a lot of other sites have moved in positions.

I'm sure Google will be doing minor tweaks to the new update over the weekend, so it may be best to wait until they're finished with the changes before we spend time reverse-engineering this update.

Yes figured that is happening. I really think when everything dies down, it'll be the sites with really little content that get hit.

I just went on an aged EMD buying spree (great timing I know). Thought I would see what could happen as I saw a lot of serps dominated by them. I have about 10 I'm tracking. The weird thing is they all have from 1 long 1k word well written article to 4 articles.

5 of them are still ranking between 1st and 2nd page (it's low competition) and the other 5 got demolished.

They all have low keyword density and no to hardly any backlinks.

All the same theme.

Even the ones destroyed from the serps are still indexed.

8 out of 10 don't have any affiliate links or adsense on them yet. The two that do, 1 is still there and 1 got hit, so I don't think that's it.

I'm trying to really see any connection as to why half are still ranking and half aren't, I can't. I think G has been really trying to screw parts of the serps and raise other parts with the same indicators to mix up webmasters. It's still early and like others said, I'll wait till the dust settles and then try and see If I can find any connections.

Still early day's i guess. Might be a good idea to keep monitoring those and then come back and post if any changes or a connection is found.

All we know is that google has screwed with the serps and every tom, dick and harry has been hit.

Just an update on a friends website.

1 : EMD

2: 87 pages

3: Slapped

4: totally disappeared this morning.

He's monitoring his website all day, and he's just informed me that he's back and has ranked number one, which he was originally ranking at number 3.

it's looking like EMD's with very few pages are getting hit hard, with some bigger EMD's getting hit by accident and as google carry on there little updates the quality ones are coming back.

I re-ran my tracking software for a few keywords, although I now wish I ran it for a lot more...anyway from what I saw it looks like Google is still tweaking the algorithm. Fortunately, I say it looks better than it did this morning.

It appears that Google's boner for authority sites is going flaccid.
- 3% of non-authority sites are ranking significantly higher
- The only sites that decreased significantly in ranking were Youtube, WikiHow, About.com, and ehow
- A large percentage (5-10%) of pages that were ranking this morning are no longer ranking, however, about 70% of these pages that were removed were not relevant (in my opinion). This, in turn, caused a lot of sites to rank higher by about 10 positions on average.

I'm going to briefly talk about two sites i worked with 60 days ago and answering in the format you gave above:

1. Your domain : EMD or Non-EMD?

The first one is an EDM, 2yrs+ and ranking on the 3rd page for it's 2 keywords in the domain name (competitive keywords).

The other is non EDM, 1yr+ and ranking on page 2, 3 for 3 different keywords.

2. How many indexed pages did the site have?

The EDM has 9 pages including contact & privacy.

While the non EDM has 7 pages with the contact & privacy.

3: did you get slapped, Yes or no?

Both sites did not but fell from page one to 2 and 3.

4: still in big G? still there? completely disappeared?

Sure, still ranking in G (less than 30).

by the looks of it, everyone's reporting different... there is site's with very little content still ranking, and sites with huge pages of content that have been hit.

it's looking like maybe giving a week or so to die down to get the real damage done via the new update.
