Please note I have no programming skills whatsoever or much money.
Also pleaser list here good membership sites so I can view them.

Well, its a good idea to have some nice start up capital,

You Will Need to Cover at the very basic.

Domain
Hosting
Scripts
The stuff you will be offering: Ebooks, SCripts, Software etc. etc.
Advertising: Everything from PPC to Offline Marketing Techs like Flyers and business Cards etc. etc.
Programmer to Create the site:

And just that is at least $100-200 at its cheapest.

You need to specify what kind of membership site you want to run.

There are a plenty of scripts available on market for different needs.

A couple of them that I know and can tell without knowing your exact requirements are

There's also the simpler, cheaper, crappier way to go that's been floating around for some time now:

1- Get a domain name
2- Build a Squezze page
3- Put a Paypal button on it
4- Get an autoresponder
5- Associate a google group or whatever to it if you want, as long as you can keep it private. There are even many web 2.0 sites that give you the chance to keep your channel private ( I understand Twitter is one of them )
5- Use Paydotcom if you want an affiliate program ( particularly for the IM niche )

The content will be delivered by autoresponder, and freshness can be provided by resources in point 5). If content is evergreen, and you promote let's say by SEs,YT and affiliates, you can pretty much keep it 90% automated.

Of course, you don't want to build a $97/month IM membership site like this. However, for other niches or memberships in the $7-$17 range I guess it should work, as long as content is really good and you can establish and brand yourself appropiately within your niche. In fact, I'm about to start using a model like this.

It works good, it's very easy & well explained.

I had never done a membership site before and this worked fine + there is instruction for paypal button or clickbank products.. I like it.
