Macbook Pro or Macbook Air 2012 for IM? I am confused

So I have drilled down my choice to Macbook pro and Macbook Air(both 13")which cost the same

The specs which I will be going for Air is

• 1.8GHz dual-core Intel Core i5 processor
• 4GB RAM
• 128GB flash storage
• Intel HD Graphics 4000

And for Pro is

• 2.5GHz dual-core Intel Core i5
• 4GB RAM
• 500GB hard drive
• Intel HD Graphics 4000

Those who have these laptops give me a final answer as I will be purchasing next week or so
I already have a VPS so no issues with softwares. Only thing which is important to me is the
1) Battery
2) Heating issues(Which one gets less heated?)
3) Speed (I wont play games so everything is browser work)

Battery I am not sure... Apple has that number in their site! Also you can look-up reviews and see perhaps a more "real world" spec.

In terms of speed for browser work both CPU are going to be the same, you won't really notice. Only for gaming, rendering graphics, video editing, etc do you really want the larger CPU. However I really like the SSD! Things like boot up the laptop and load the browser will be faster on the SSD instead of the HDD. Also the SSD has the advantage of being harder to damage. If you drop a laptop with HDD while it is running, there's a good chance the HDD will become damaged and your data lost. SSD has no moving parts so you can abuse it more.

But I am pretty sure in Macbook air you can NOT upgrade RAM or SSD/HDD, what you buy is what it will be forever. So maybe if you want to buy a machine for many years you could upgrade Macbook Pro later on with SSD and bigger RAM. Of course, please double check I am not an Apple fanatic and don't follow all the changes! Like how more recent models you can no longer swap the battery!

I have a MacBook Pro. It gets very hot. You could cook an egg on it.

But, whatever one you get, make sure you upgrade the ram. Go on amazon and pick it up. You can get it for about $100 and Apple will charge you $400. It is easy to install. I saw a huge performance increase. I don't think the solid state HD is worth it right now. The MacBook comes out of the "rest" state very quickly with the additional ram. It feels like it has a solid HD. If you are using it on a table more often than not, get the pro. It is not hot all of the time, but it does about 30% of the time I use it for extended periods.

If you are planning to carry it all the time, Air is the best. Looks slim, light. I have a Pro, and performance wise Pro is the best. But since it is just for browsing, it won't really matter.

Conclusion -
More performance - Pro is the best (Slight heating issues around the trackpad at times)
Awesome looks - Air is the best

Yep, I dont do any video editing or photoshop stuff. All I do is basic IM work and I already have VPS for the tools.. Air sounds better than Pro i think

If you've never used a mac, the only thing you'll know how to do is browse the web. I mean, it starts up lightning quick, etc but it's a big change.

People who never used a Mac should stay that way and vice versa.

Why are you spend $800+ for a name on a laptop that performs subpar and also doesnt run many IM programs? Buy a non-apple laptop ->ave a few hundred/thousand -> invest in proxies/websites/apps -> profit.

Actually if you compare equivalent systems Apple seems competitive, especially with the MacBook Pro.$1020 HP Spectre XT Pro - Core i5 1.7 GHz - 128 GB SSD - 13.3 in 1366 x 768 - 4 GB RAMYou get what you pay for. Dell is always cheapest and it's bad quality and absolutely the worst service ever. For e.g. I call HP and they ship me a replacement hard drive overnight. I call Dell and they make me ship the computer, 14 days turn-around.

You said you use a vps for IM software so why spend the money for a mac just for using its internet browser?

macs are fantastic for serious applications like music production, photoshop anything that needs time and you need the mac so windows wont crush (windows 7 are pretty stable also).

Well if you love macs for their design, OS, or need them for serious and tedious programs go get them.

if not IM is perfectly good with windows.

IMO you can go for pro if just looking to use, if your main motto to use it when travelling then no one can beat AIR

I got a HP DV7, 17' srceen, intel core i7, 8gb ram (up do 16gb, ill add soon) and 1TB HD, plus a good Radeon Graphic Card

I like it, you should go with something like this, specially for IM, since almost all tools are Windows based

Zapdos, I wouldn't go for something different because of the $500 difference. Time is worth more than money, and if you're going to have to spend all your time learning a new operating system, then you're going to lose more than what $500 is worth.
If you know what you want, and for sure know what to do with it and how to do it as soon as you get it, then by all means, get it! Air > Pro, and Apple vs Windows is something that your past will decide.

I would probably go with a 15" if it is going to be your everyday computer, I have a 13" laptop but I also have a 27" and a 32" monitor on my desktops. Anything over 2~3 hours on the laptop and I start to go crazy.
