The Flippa Implosion Continues - New Changes Coming Tomorrow

I'm not sure whether this change will hurt or improve Flippa's bottom line but what I'm absolutely sure of is that it will improve the success rate of my auctions as once again I will have less "Buy now for only $149.99" template sites to compete with.

I think what you're saying is you won't have the clutter of the $149 websites surrounding your listings. With less listings on Flippa your auctions will be more prominent. Be careful what you wish for. The Flippa marketplace used to accommodate a wide range of buyers and a wide range of listings. While I can appreciate you wanting more exposure for your listings, I think you'll find less exposure and less success because the marketplace is no longer dynamic and a bore.

Street auction marketplaces need the WHOLE RANGE of listings for success. Auction wars and similar reality TV shows are very popular. When have you ever seen all the lockers with high dollar items? Is every successful bid in the 4 or 7 digit range? Of course not. Some auctions end at less than $100 and others many thousands. That's the real world of auctions. Not everyone walks to those auctions with $50k in their pockets and the auctioneers don't chastise the low value bidders because they give them dynamics (excitement, starts and rolls the bidding). Of course the main source of excitement is generated by a fast talking auctioneer. Online listings don't have that element.

Now look at the largest online auction marketplace, eBay. Do you see them tossing all the low value listings? On eBay you can purchase a single t-shirt for $2 or you can purchase 10,000 t-shirts for $18,000. There are thousands of listings for under a $1 and listings all the way to the million dollar range. There is an adaptive listing price range to accommodate everyone. Why do you think eBay allows all these low price listings? Those are what drive millions of people to eBay everyday. The chance to win something for little. The chance to purchase a steal. That is what I refer to by dynamics. Online auction marketplaces must create this because the bidders are in different areas, different time zones and not grouped in a room with a fast talking auctioneer. Again you create online excitement, if you will, by allowing a wide range of listings for a wide range of buyers with a countdown clock.

The LAST THING you want to do is set a high listing price to stop your low dollar listings. The LAST THING you want to do is tell your low dollar sellers and buyers you don't want them on your auction site when YOU NEED THEM! Flippa's latest changes has killed their excitement. The auction place is a bore. They have done the exact opposite of what they needed to do for success. You need inventory in all ranges. You need buyers in all ranges. You need sellers in all ranges. An online auction marketplace needs to accommodate everyone.

Each bidder plays a role during a listing, even the high dollar listings by brokers. The buyers with little money and big dreams bid when the listing is low to quickly increase the bid count and fill in the low number bids. The buyers with a bit more money fill in the middle range and continue filling in the bid range while building the bid count. Finally the buyers with the deep pockets see the high activity, hundreds of bids and the value perception is set and caught their eye. The broker gets his high dollar sale and life is good. But remove the two bottom tiers of those bidders and your listings will have a dramatically different outcome. As I said earlier, be careful what you wish for.

To rebound, Flippa needs some free listing days or reduced price listing days to allow sellers to let some sites go cheaper, to bring back low dollar bidders looking for steals and bring back the excitement of the auction marketplace. But what does this Country bumpkin know about online auction markets and how to make them successful? I hope Flippa with their arrogance, ignores everything I have to say. Although I don't hate Flippa, I don't need or want them fixing their broken site. They are leaving a lot of money on the table which I plan to pick up. Although their changes are terrible for their marketplace, it's GREAT news for their competitors.

I like the changes that I've seen (from a buyer's perspective) recently

- Due to their higher listing fees, i do believe that it has reduced the number of total garbage listings that filled up most of the site. Its just annoying having to scroll through so many listings that are quick templates, tossed together with spun or duplicate content, with zero traffic. These sites are useless
- They've added adsense verification, which I think is the most useful thing they've done yet
- They added proxy bidding
- Yesterday they changed the 4 hour auction extension to 1 hour. I have mixed feelings on this one, because if I wanted a listing before and it was going to end overnight, I could wake up once in the middle of the night to check it and then would be sure that it wouldn't end before I woke up the next morning. This issue though isn't that much of a problem because of the proxy bidding.

Overall, I'm still a fan of flippa, but if someone brought in a good alternative I'd give it a try.

Quite a broad statement from a buyer's perspective. I've purchased many "template" websites and even MNS sites from people on BHW. However I know how to crunch data, analyze and rank keywords, find LSI the EMD qualifies for and more. I have NEVER seen a website with a domain name that was useless, not one time! Even with spun content, an overused template and no backlinks or traffic the domain name and website has value.

How quickly can you purchase a domain name and put a template website on it that has the correct title, decent colors, images, keywords and some sort of content? If you can do it in less than 2 hours I know many Flippa sellers that would hire you. What do you think someone's time is worth, to purchase a domain, build a website and list it on Flippa?

Useless only shows your inability to see and realize potential and those sites aren't for you. They're for buyers like me that can quickly crunch numbers, have very good paid tools, have quality content ready to go, have a backlink system in place and can make almost any domain name and website a winner. These template sellers provide the heavy lifting for me (or boring ass job is another way to put it) and I used to pick these up for $100 or less and in a month have them earning money by dropping good content on them and tossing a few backlinks their way. It was quick and easy and Flippa, the template seller and I all won.

It sounds like you are looking for websites that are built by someone like me and already making money and in that definition, yes those $50-$150 are useless for you. For me they're very good value if I like the numbers I see for the domain and backlinks. I've picked up PR3 websites that had duplicate content, boring template and poor graphics for less than $150. I usually spent an hour or so on them and disappointed if they don't make $50+ a month. I've never had one that didn't earm me back my money in 1-6 months. Besides banking I add these as part of my PR network where I can siphon link juice anytime I want. I'm sure hundreds of buyers saw these under-developed websites as useless but in the right hands they are very good value. Many of those have a backlink network I could never duplicate.

My point is what is useless to you could be gold to someone else. You and Flippa both need to know that. There is no such thing as a useless website. I've never seen one. It's only useless to the person that doesn't have the ability to develop it and looking for fully developed websites in the sub-$200 price range. I don't sell any website that makes me money and I don't list on Flippa. I'm a buyer if I participate at all.

That's a very valid point. Flippa survives on sentiment and the impression they've created of being big and busy. If big and busy disappears, the overall sentiment could be hit. As much as Flippa would like to get away from the lower end business, the fact remains that they can't do it without severely impacting the whole marketplace. Their branding is built around "flipping", the domain was selected to appeal to this market, it's not that easy to pull out now.

I think the market will decide on how useful these changes will be. Obviously Flippa wants to attract high dollar sites/businesses and it may end up not being a very viable marketplace for sellers of turn-key sites with no revenue.

They seem to know what they are doing and I am sure they have the data to back their decisions. They are definitely a market leader and I think to say that they are imploding is a little premature.

The only way is down for flippa unless they make some drastic changes. No support on weekends.. what a load of crap. You send emails, never get any response. Unacceptable.

Yes Flippa appears trying to turn their eBay style marketplace into a Christies style marketplace and they don't have the history, sellers, inventory nor reputation to make that work.

However it is good entertainment and a lesson that education is no replacement for experience. The co-owner boasting of being on Forbes Best 30 under 30 in April is quite amusing given elementary business mistakes made in the last 6 months. I don't think anyone can consider a 30% drop in inventory and revenue a success. Maybe Matt should do less telling us how good he is and more showing us how good he is.

I will be amazed to see this sinking ship stop taking on water without a dramatic personal and policy change. My opinion of Forbes has diminished considerably if these are rated the best business men today. Like I said, education will never replace experience. I can smell a wrong decision even if I can't argue it on paper in a boardroom.

Almost a 30% decrease in listings compared year over year is quite a drop in growth. Their listings, listing success rates and online reputation are all falling. I'm not sure where you think concern should happen but if I was steering the ship, I'd want serious answers from my managers if my inventory recently dropped 30% and my online reputation was taking a serious beating.

I was considering selling a domain on Flippa after all the recommendations I received around the net. I went to their homepage, registered, and started the process of listing my domain. BUT then I saw the 29$ fee...YIKES!! That's way too expensive and greedy. I immediately hit cancel and abandonded the account. So not worth it.

I remeber selling sitepoint.asia to them for a few thousand as the dimwits forgot to do it themselves.

I hope there will be some competition soon as flippa is dead

I don't know why people are getting bent out of shape over a $29 listing fee. It'll just scare off the lower end sellers who were cluttering up the market place with really bad sites.

The constant increases in charges - adding a success fee, increasing other fees, introducing upgrade fees to get the visibility that you should be getting anyway and now the increase in listing fee - aren't translating into a better service. The extra money they've been raking in has paid for implementation of Verified Adsense and Verified Analytics, but not in cutting the scams or improving customer services which are the two areas most in need of attention. I'm talking real improvements in customer services, not putting up a couple of scarecrows over the weekend to give the impression someone's around.

Andrew says above that recent changes won't have an impact on sales. Probably not, if we're talking about just the auction extension time change. There are other reasons sales are being impacted. With the number of listings decreasing rapidly and the number of successful sales dropping by the day, revenue is bound to be affected while their fixed costs on staff etc doesn't change. Let's see how long they can keep that up.

ber789, if you feel there is no implosion, go see Flippa's falling sales figures for yourself. You can compare there any period from last year against a similar period from this year.

Not trying to Hijack your post but this is exactly what I predicted nearly 18 months ago! As a result I started developing a completely unique script which has some never seen before features which not even flippa have thought of! We offer free listing and 24 hour support as we have people based throughout the globe.

The sites not online yet as we're still ironing out the last bits but should be online within the next month - we don't want to launch prematurely and create the same user experience as Flippa - annoyance!

Good luck to your venture.

I'm not doing anything until after the Holidays. I've got a full plate until then. Plus I need to let Flippa dig the hole a bit deeper like eBay did and really piss off their customer base. If anyone jumps too early Flippa only needs to revert the price model back or offer free listing days to steal back the clientele they've lost.

Let their customers get really pissed and when you launch later it won't matter what Flippa does, the clients won't go back and you have a better chance of retaining them. The wounds are too fresh currently and with just a band-aid and an apology Flippa can heal the damage they've done in the last 6 months. In another six months everyone will say FU to Flippa and ignore whatever gimmick they come up with. Patience is on your side and the further down the slope you let Flippa slide the harder it will be for them to climb back up. ;-)

Good luck

yeah flippa sucks. I had several sites to sell and this happened to be when they raised the price to $29 listing plus so I never listed. To kvmcable...when you get your site up lets us know :)

Really wanted to read the whole post, but 1200 words written with white font on black background is just too much for my eyes :p
