Keyword Ranking Question for the experts ?

Before I submit my question and ask for suggestions/help/advise. Let me quickly describe, whats going on.

My friend had a blog and on 15th September, it will celebrate it's birthday. He handed over the blog to me. He already had some 160+ posts and are getting good traffic from long tail keywords. After I got possession, I saw there is one keyword with 10,000+ per month searches. My friend blog surround that keyword topic but didn't had a post target that specific keyword.

I create a 1200+ words post with bullets, images etc. (my on page optimization seems good but suggestions are welcome)

1: I bookmark (Digg and Stumbleupon ).
2: I share it on facebook, twitter.

Summary:
1: Blog is one year old.
2: Blog has 160 Posts (self written and unique).
3: Blog is getting traffic.
4: Post is created for targeted keyword with 1200+ words with good on page optimization.

Question: What else should I do to rank no1 and monitor my progress in serps ?

Suggestion/Advice please.

I will daily/weekly update you guys on the progress.

Original content is always king, regardless of you've bullets, italics, bolds or underlined in the article. To rank high, simply add more and more unique content with target keywords. Also don't forget to make the article interesting.

OOPS I forgot to mention am not a keyword expert.

I have already identified the keyword and my post surrounds that keyword and that's what i said in my thread..
Now I need to rank that post and check its progress in serps.. For that i need help

I'd recommend not to give all the information away in a single post of 1200 words. Better make it short and interesting and make it a series of posts and have links to them within the posts like part 1, part 2 etc. This way you'll have more articles as well as some traffic boosted if the article is really interesting. You ping services to notify the update to the search engines and add more articles with the targeted keywords and repeat the same until you rank high.

But if you look at my original post, i mentioned that most of the articles surround this keyword but no post is optimized for this keyword.

You keep reiterating that no post is optimised for the keyword....then optimise a few - don't concentrate too much on your chosen KW, instead use a KW combination

This forum is loaded with great people and excellent information, read through it a bit instead of letting somebody share their hard -earned systems with you, develop your own.

If you are serious about ranking this page then it will be something you do for the lifetime of the site, not just a one off deal and 'boom' it's at number one for life. So it's important to learn these things as opposed to just following somebody elses directions blindly, only your knowledge will move you forward.

You should search the white hat SEO section of this forum for onpage SEO, offpage SEO and link building. Once that's done you should move onto social media as a source of new and sustained traffic which will be over and above your chosen KW search of 10k +

Incidentally, is this KW global, phrase or exact match?

I believe in the power of forum and the awesome people who are always willing to share their hard earned systems for free and helping other gets successful gives them more joy.

I have limited knowledge and cannot make my own system, every one in this forum is more knowledgeable than me and they will help me.
The keyword is 10,000 Global Exact Match and 3,000 Exact Local.

Hehe. Ok, really... ranking isn't just about getting there; it's about staying there. And to do that, original content is king. And, subscribers. I'm assuming this blog is for people... you should also measure user engagement. Comments... shares of your blog posts... subscriptions, etc. When you do publish a post around a keyword, don't let the whole post be just about the keyword. When you write about a great topic that is relevant, the keywords come naturally.

And yes you can do more to get more out of each post. That was a great tip about splitting the 1200 words blog post into several blog posts, as long as each post can hold it's own. You can do a lot to link back to your own site and build Page Rank, but if you do it right your readers will want to share your posts themselves with like minded friends.

OK now you say you don't have much experience, so next question; are you targeting the phrase/KW just for the traffic or to sell them something?
