Web design size?

Had an interest in web design for a long time but never actually gave it ago until now. Going to be making the basic layout in photoshop and then attempting to code it. What size do people use? Read a lot on google, some people saying use a resolution like 1280x720 because many people still use monitors that support that resolution.. others say do it as big as your res. Not having any knowledge in webdesign its hard picking out the correct answer.

Any help would be appreciated.

If you can build any system that supports any ratio of resolution then you will not face any problem like this. Try to build user friendly system for any type of resolution.

I typically design my pages to be around 950px wide if going with a fixed width layout.

Work with the 960.gs system. It's STANDARD. It comes with great photoshop templates as well that has you drafting quickly.

Building your websites to be a fixed resolution is extremely bad practice. Optimize for 1024x768, this should cover most users although other screen sizes are increasingly common so don't ignore them. Don't worry so much about height. You should make sure that your sizing is fluid not static so it'll adjust on different screen sizes. If you're uncomfortable with this then using a grid system like 960.gs is probably a good idea.

The website should also look good on mobile devices and tables. So fixed resolution isn't the best option.

I am not sure since when fixed resolution has somehow become "extremely bad practice". Of course the current buzz on the web design world right now is Responsive Web Design and Mobile-first approach, but many websites are perfectly good with fixed resolution. Even most popular social media websites which hire top html/css coders are still using fixed resolution.

But when it comes to web design sizes/resolution, I think it depends on the website needs. If the target visitors are mobile users, then one should go for responsive web. Keep in mind that no website looks the same on every browser/platform. It all comes down to the goals of a website.

Well im new to to webdesign its going to be my fix design so im guessing the resolution won't really matter to begin with as its more a test that something id release to the public/use.

The resolution of your websites really depends on your target, age, location and several other factors for instance there are people on others country that still have old pcs based on windows me and/or old pcs running with 800x600px screen res, also there is the age factor where some old people prefer bigger size fonts which makes sites easier to read etc, ofc these were just examples.

However you also have to consider the mobile settings so being able to develop a website that can auto adjust itself to all designs from 800x600 is a big plus you will not let anyone scape from it and having it mobile ready is ofc another plus for tablet and smartphone users, not to mention that we have more cellphone users then computers

So prior to decide which resolution you will be using I would consider first who am I going to target or just go all out with all resolutions.

Using javascript jquery css you can make adjustable resolutions a easy thing.
