I love how this thread is beginning to put the two against each other, like there is some type of competition. They are different sports!

I really enjoyed watching American football when it came to London. The thing that annoys me the most about it though is how it stop starts every minute for like 2 minutes at a time.

It's literally the perfect sport made for television, as it has stoppages for replays, the actual play is run on full speed which makes the product great but as the Wall Street Journal pointed out there is only 11 minutes of action during a 3-hour game.

That's because of calling plays, plus there is 300+LB men playing it they need a breather lol.

Well there is 4 -15 minute quarters so really an hour game takes 3 hours.
The strategy and the guessing of what the next play is going to be makes it exciting.

Don't forget they have 40 seconds to execute a play between downs, so a lot of the time is spent in the huddle and the actual 'action' of the play is only a few seconds.
Personally, I love pre-snap. Watching Brady shift the offensive line when he identifies the Blitz is a nuanced thing that enhances the viewing experience of the educated fan. The best part is when a team goes no-huddle, I remember watching the Pats last year destroy Tampa in the pre-season and they were making their D look silly with how quick they were snapping the ball essentially as they were lining up.

.. It will never be settledI just don't understand why the US has called football soccer, and 'american football', football .. Every other footballing nation on calls it football (in their own language), so why change it?

Initially, there were hundreds of types of football played all over the world, but the rules were not uniform.
American football developed from rugby, when someone in a rugby game picked up the ball and ran with it.
Since at the time Soccer was called "Association Football", and the American version was called American Football (Canadian came later), the term Football became the popular word for the American version in the USA, but everywhere else it simply meant any game played by kicking a ball.
When rules became standard, the term "Associatiion football" was coined for the British game of "rugby football" to separate the sport from "soccer football". The term "Association Football ' was a term used by the upper crust.
Aparently, at the time it was common for British schoolboys to add an "er" to a sport. Rugby was called "rugger" and "Soccer football," became "soccer" to the commoners. This new naming convention was adopted by Americans to tell the difference between American football, soccer, and rugby.
By then, American football was in our vernacular "football" and we called Association Football soccer, deferring to the popular British slang term of the times.
Then, Soccer became more widespread in the world, and the term Football was used by more nations than Soccer, as it was closer to the actual name of the sport, Association Football. They just dropped the word association.
Subsequently, the term football began to be used again even in Britain, gradually replacing the term soccer in most places except the USA. ( I believe it is still in common use in Britian, but I may be wrong.)
So the whole damn mess started because the Brits could not make up their mind!

Actually Canadian football was first played in 1861,whereas American football was first played in 1869.
