Im not sure how to go about this. I have a product that sells in the US and the majority of my traffic comes from there, however places such as the UK im getting traffic. How do I go about capturing these people ? I know you can redirect by ip, but my question is how do I rank my pages for specif countries. Do I rewrite my content for each specific country? or can I get my original content that ranks well in the US to rank up in the UK ?:confused:

concentrate on your us traffic and open another site for uk, use geo targeting to redirect your visitors for both site (you can use sub domains if you like)

My understanding is that you want to by a domain name from whatever country you want to market...it's not a must, but is supposed to help your rankings as well for that country.

Ok I got that part, but how about ranking for a specific keyword in a given country? Will get targetting a specific page or sub-domain and getting backlinks to it will let it rank for that specific country?

of course it will rank, try to have backlinks on several uk sites this also helps you

I ended up posting this twice when i tried to edit a typo. Not sure the edit function is working correctly. Anyway my post is below.

jdeeze, I do SEO in the UK and here's how it works:

If you put a site on a UK IP or use a .co.uk it goes in the Google UK index. It ALSO goes in the Google international index that the American's see. If you get links to your site you will outrank any US hosted site that has the equivalent number of (or even many more) links. This is because Google UK gives preferential treatment to sites based in the UK.

(Test this: try searching for "dog food" in Google UK - you'll see UK sites come up. However, if you go to Google international and search, you'll see different sites. Check those sites and you'll see they have many more links than the UK sites you just saw. Then when you go lower in the US SERPS you'll still see the UK sites).

If you want to rank well in the UK and sell to American's what you should do is:
- use a .com
- host in the UK
- link as usual

This way you aim to get the best of both worlds.

So you have an advantage when competing in the UK SERPS against US companies. AND you compete on the same footing in the US SERPS.

Links from UK sites -- well I haven't ever tried it and I have many top 10 (top 5) rankings in the UK.

Good luck.

Thanks, kaliyuga, for clearing that up. Thought it was like that and needed some confirmation.

Then you should know that this is not 100% true very few poelpe in the uk use the UK only search

And the international and search as jdeeze called it don't return the same results as using
A USA proxy before doing a search

jdeeze if your site is ranking well in the USA think hard before risking its ranking for uk traffic

This is nothing to do with people using the "UK only search".

It's the Google "international" search we're talking about here. It's different in different countries.

More incorrect information

Try your test in California then in North Dakota then in Florida by your words the returning pages should be the same which is incorrect

This is Geo Targetting it goes deeper then just by the country

I'm pissed.

Exactly which part of "It's different in different countries" is incorrect?

You sound the like the kind of guy who would create an argument with a wall.

Point proven I believe when you have to resort to personal attacks

Just a perceptive observation, and I think quite fair in the circumstances.

Whoa guys lol. Well what I was trying to get at is I have a site that sells a particular product in the US and it ranks well; however I notice I am getting traffic from the UK and would like to get some conversions from them, using an affiliate in the UK. Essentially I wanted to know what was the best way to get my site to rank in the UK. The same could go for France or Germany. I just wanted to see if making a subdomain would work and then the best way specifically make it rank for that given country.
