Has Anyone Recovered From BMR Penalty?

Hello All,

I know that there are lots of sites hit hard because they had links from BMR network.

I'm one of them and I lost my main site, earnings decreased from xxxx to $100 this month.

I'm 100% sure that this is a penalty and not a result of loosing links from BMR.

It's been 4 months which I thought to be the duration of this penalty but seems like I'm wrong again.

I've started to doubt if this penalty will ever be lifted.

Has anyone recovered from this? You don't need to share your methods, but It would be nice to hear

that it's possible to recover.

Any help greatly appreciated.

you're right about all eggs in one basket. But it's not the case with BMR. Sites got slapped regardless of their link diversity. Only a couple of links from BMR network was enough.

I should've created more income sources.

What makes you think it is a penalty as opposed to these links being devalued (and potentially other spammy links being devalued as part of the pattern)?

There is SO much talk about 'penalties' around - when people have nothing other than devalued spammy links.

Do you have any 'given' links or just spam?
Is there a message in your WMT?
Do your keywords show AT ALL or just very low?
Is your site indexed?
What have you done following the 'penalty'?

If you give your 'symptoms' then someone may give you good advice - which may put your misery to an end.

If your site has got a message in WMT then its a penalty and pretty hard to recover.

But if you have not got any message then most probably your backlinks are devalued, you can come back strong again with quality back-links.

Agree 100%.

Only exceptions are if you don't have WMT (then there is nowhere for them to put the message) or they can connect you to something to something very naughty - site not indexed at all and you'll know fine rightly that you've been very naughty indeed! They'll send you no message - as they don't want you back! (generally you'll have done something illegal or the site itself is part of a network - not just getting links from a network)

So if you're still indexed at all - you're definitely not in that second category!

I have a good record of getting penalised by Google and most of the times I had no clue to determine the exact reason since I had many types of link building and onsite seo going on simultaneously.

But this time (first time ever) I've caught Google with 100% accuracy cause I only built links with BMR to only 5 select pages.

And out of 15 pages that are #1 at Google, only those 5 pages went from #1 to 600+ overnight. Then after 3 months other 10 pages followed the same route. But it was the BMR links that initiated the demolition.

I appreciate your efforts, but It's pretty clear at this state. My site got a penalty due to BMR links. And it's been 4 months since the beginning of the penalty (or filter whatever you call it)

Thanks for the suggestion, but I think Google is randomizing with WMT messages too.

I didn't get any messages, but I still contacted them to "confess" that I used BMR.

They replied that that's not the reason, but I don't believe them. This is just another variable in their spam algorithm.

If I was not so sure about the reason, they could've fooled me with that message but my evidence is very solid.

I hope so :)

But I didn't get a message at WMT either.

Anyone that got hit after using BMR posts?

Even if you don't use WMT, you can see if you got a message if you start using them. Noticed this when I added my penalized site to WMT, I got a message instantly after verifying it.

I only used 8 BMR posts and about 25 ALN on a interior page of my site. Got the unnatural links notice back in april. The whole site tanked, this site had over 50 keywords in the top 10.

I ended up 404ing that one page, and the site has come back. Not as high as before, but getting traffic and leads again. But the keyword that interior page was targeting has not recovered, i created a new fresh page with new high quality links and it will not rank, at least not yet after about 3 months.

Luckily I had another aged site targeting that same keyword set with almost no link profile. It's now #2 and #15 and climbing after about 3 months of SEO....

I know this is just one site, but seems like a penalty for the keyword that was targeted.

One of my sites is recovering nicely.
It was on BMR and Linxboss... I asked them to delete all my profiles ASAP (and they did)
I added about 10,000 words of content a month for 3 months (not that much) and linked to it slowly.
It's now making about 60% of what it did before. Mind you I don't rely on Google for more than 50% of my traffic anyway.

Where does you other 50% of traffic come from? I dont want the exact place just an idea not to depend 100% on the big G
Thanks

Then it's dropped out of top 100... but I must admit that BMR wasn't my main linking strategy for that even before the hit.
Thanks for that - it brings up a very valid point.

Being battered through the 'normal' Google algorithm as opposed to a manual review is not a matter of getting a link from the wrong place, but getting a pattern of links (as I'm sure you know).

That pattern could be with:

1. Same anchor text
2. Same 'value' of site/link (lots of next-to-no-value)
3. Same 'type' of site (article directory/directory)
4. Pattern of obtaining links (5/10/100 etc. per week/month)
5. Other stuff
6. Other stuff...

Adding JUST 1 link can complete a pattern, getting a bunch of cheap links from BMR can be enough to make a pattern, adding some BMR links to an already spammy bunch can make a pattern, LOSING SOME LINKS can be enough to LEAVE A PATTERN BEHIND.

The other, quite realistic option is that the Google algorithm changed to write off spammy stuff that had previously slipped by.

Johndoes, are there any authentic, authority links from trustworthy places that should show Google they can trust your site again or do they just know you've been spamming them? If not, why should they start trusting you again? Because a certain time has passed? They don't do the 'xx day penalty' any more - get some GOOD links (and I'm not saying buy some on DP or anywhere like that!)

A GOOD link/few GOOD links can cover a multitude of sins! (if it's not a manual penalty - which it isn't as you've had no WMT note)

Because I only have 6 sites (I gave up microsite stuff several years ago) I actively post and contribute in each of the 4 niches i'm in (6 sites - 4 niches) So - for instance, the site you see in my sig here gets about 40% from google, 20% from other search engines or directories and 40% direct ref from forums and blogs I post in. (like here at BHW, and other SEO forums and blogs)

[edit] just checked - my actual google percentage for the last 90 days is 37.5, barely over a third from Google, and my traffic levels are going up slightly this year despite the percentage from Google going down.

This is not really possible if you are in dozens of niches (unless you hire a lot of people to write and post for you)
4 niches is my limit - and so is 6 sites.
2 sites were hit by Penguin, one has almost totally recovered the other is about 50% recovered. I built 2 other sites more or less straight away for the niches that got hit (that's why it's 4 niches - 6 sites)

I make my sites big. 3 of them have passed the 1000 post mark (approx 1 million words each) all unique, all hand written. The other 3 are in the hundreds of thousands. They all have at least 30 videos on (linked from Youtube and a few other high PR video sites) and plenty of images and interlinking of content. They are all in fields I know about personally.

I end up getting traffic for all sorts of phrases I have never done a single bit of offsite SEO for. I go for maybe 15-10 medium tail phrases ("medium tail"? 2-3 words) and end up a year and half later ranking decently for hundreds of long tails on one site.

None of them are "authority" yet. IMO that's 100,000 unique visitors per day MINIMUM in a decent sized niche - a couple of them are past the 10,000 mark now though (one has been hitting about 30,000 uniques a day for most of this year - which is nice)

Check out the guy from "outof8.com" He's getting 240,000 uniques a day to a gaming review blog that's barely 7 and a half years old - he's never monetized it, and now he's quitting. I don't think he's got any idea that he could be making $10,000 a month minimum from that targeted traffic just with adsense and "game" adverts. Some people eh?
