I normally do local web-design and photography to keep me alive, so I have various offline marketing techniques. One of the techniques that's been working particularly well for me lately is hitch-hiking. Since I haven't bothered to learn to drive yet I stick mainly to hitch-hiking to get around, and surprisingly it is a great way of networking. If it's legal, and safe in your local area you may want to give it a try for some offsite advertising.

Method.
It's a little more challenging then just sticking your thumb out and getting a ride. When someone picks you up you're automatically entered into conversation just by common courtesy, you can control how the conversation goes, just be sure to mention you do web-design (or whatever else you do) to see if it spikes there interest. If it does interest them start questioning them and see if they could use your services and then pitch your service to them. It really isn't that challenging you just have to be comfortable with your services and pitch.

Client #1
The first client that I got through this method was a website for a local paddle-boarding company several months ago, I've done photography, and web-design for them. Profit of $450

Client #2
My second client that i got through hitching was a professional hip-hop artist and dancer. She wanted a website to showcase her music and her personal portfolio, I did the design and graphics for this project. Profit of $300

Client #3
One of my larger clients so far. This person runs a wood-shop and breeds Corgis, and needed a website and photography for both. I did all the graphics, photography, and design for this project. Profit of $1,350

Client #4

This client was another wood worker who ran a wood-shop, actually he rented shop space from the previous client. I was picked up by them hitching and he requested a site for his wood-shop which I did all the design, photography, and graphics for. Profit of $700

The four $700 clients.
In the last two days I've been hitchhiking a lot more then usual. I've gone over 400 miles, easily. On my first ride I got a gig for a bed and breakfast website, AND a organic farm website. My second ride (third client) was for a local bakery who wants a website where they can sell baked goods online. My third ride I rode in the back of the truck and couldn't talk to the driver. My fourth ride was from the founder of an upcoming non-profit that plans on establishing a self-sustaining community and they need a website, and an online content manager. I'm doing each site for $700 profit.

Driver: "Wow you do web design and SEO? Can you build me a website for my international kidnapping and human trafficking business?"

Seriously? Apparently only business owners pick up hitchers?

For the last few weeks about 20% of the people that pick me up hitchhiking have given me a web-design gig. It's worked out mostly in my favor so far.

really gre
Where I live there are this small food (restaurant?), like that make sandwich, natural juice, or stuff like that, that are coming out in smaller city, that want to copy the big, franchises that are in the capital city.
I sometimes, go to eat there, start a conversation with the owner, and bam, very interested for website, pictures and stuff like that, and mobile website, of course no mega bucks, but still good.

Now scale!!:greddy2:...lol...jk....awesum stuff

lol interesting results but assuming it is true you must live in some friendly areas as although I have seen people get rides like that, it's quite rare as people are rather skeptical these days especially if you're a male.

This is kind of a residual project that wouldn't be easy to scale up. Only increase I'll see is improvement in my web-design skills and increases in my charge for designing a website, so I guess it's a gradual scale upwards.

I live in Hawai'i, the aloha state. It's really easy to hitch-hike across the Island here.

Good stuff man. Light years outside of my personal comfort zone too. A captive audience is a hell of a thing :)

It's not to hard to captivate your audience, especially when a 17 year old starts speaking like a well-balanced professional.

Eventually the OP is gonna be offline for a day. Then a week. Then eventually he'll just be gone...

Or he'll realize the vast knowledge throughout this community and stay and contribute and expand with the help of Black Hat World (:

Nice method of getting clients but that's a lot of hitchhiking to get a few clients, since you surely don't land a deal every ride

Like I said, I've been getting gigs about 20% of the time, and considering that I would be hitchhiking either way it's a nice bonus.

You sure you only talked to these guys? I think there is more to this method... :smlove2:

There were follow up meetings in some cases, however that's only happened twice. Most of the time they confirm they want me as there web-designer before the end of the ride.

Great thinking! Now scale it up! Pay someone to do the same thing as you, but pay them a percentage of what they make. When it comes to hitchhiking, be always safe!!
