you better read first how to do seo, how to do onpage optimization, offpage, what kind of backlinks there are, what else you can do to get high positions in search engines and so on.
if you just backlink to the site without any knowledge most probably you can say goodbye to your sites because you will be sandboxed or deindexed pretty fast.

Watch some SEO intro for newbies on youtube, I am sure you will find a lot of info that you are looking for. Or I suggest you buy yourself an All-in-one SEO book for dummies by Bruce Clay. It makes SEO much easier for newbies. I have that book and I would recommend it for anyone who wants to learn about SEO. It takes time to learn, but through reading, application, and experience, I am sure you will do well! Lotsa luck!

If you have no experience you should've done it the other way around. Build your own sites and outsource SEO. WP is easy as pie...SEO takes years of non-stop constant learning and testing and learning and testing and....to do it right.

Start with learning everything SEO related (the others already mentioned what).
The good thing is, your site can age a bit until you know what you have to do. So don't get demotivated, you have all the chances still right in front of you.
