This question is probably too broad, but...I am looking for an automatic link building software. I was wondering what you guys would recommend for someone who is just starting off? I have seen so many different ones listed here that I just couldn't decipher what was good or bad. Also do I need to be running some kind of vpn to run this software?

As a beginner I would probably opt for GSA Search Engine Ranker (this would be my first choice) or nohandsseo. Fairly simple to get your head around and somewhat 'set and forget'. They are also a one time payment. Once you have a little more experience then look at larger tools such as senuke or Ultimate Demon, if you want.
In regards to the vpn just get yourself some shared or private proxies and you should be fine. If you meant to say vps, as they're often mistaken, then it's not necessary, but depends on your home systems and internet connection.

Agreed. You should start with Scrapebox.
SB is a MUST when it comes down to black hat SEO. Also It's one of the cheapest BH tools around, + you don't need to pay a monthly fee.

Yes. Scrapebox has an auto poster for blog comments. Avoid using it to your money site to avoid getting a penalty.
With the recent g00gle updates automation is harder but not impossible if you use it correctly. you should check out senukex

SB is probably best. The more backlinks you do, the deeper in the SERP you'll fall...

so how should I structure my automatic linking, I do have second tier sites, I could go massive spammy links - web 2.0 - 2nd tier site - to money site? I was thinking of doing that but also doing massive spammy links - web 2.0 - money site, would that be safe?

SB is/was a pre panda/penguin software. G is seeing something else now for more genuine sites...

It's the type of software that could be used for these reasons if one chose too. It has the ability to create many shitty backlinks in little time.
I'm gonna go against the masses here and say that although SB is a fantastic tool, with varying levels of usefulness, it isn't the type of tools I'd recommend for first time use. It's the first one I bought but one I rarely use these days. I would recommend you look at a proggy that has a few more restrictions and more diversity, with the ability to post to more platforms, not just blog comments. But this is just my point of view, maybe I've not got the most out of my scrapebox or not spent enough time fiddling with it.

You shouldn't be buying software yet if you're asking this question, especially if you expect to click a few buttons and gold will rain from the sky. Why don't you read all the discussion threads about the Panda and Penguin updates, learn from people's mistakes, formulate a plan, THEN start thinking about how to implement your plan (bots, or otherwise). Don't put the horse before the cart.

Totally agree with the previous poster. Without really knowing what you're doing and how it all works, software such as SB can cause you more problems than get you results. I would never recommend a newbie uses just jump straight in. In fact, there are many threads on how to use SB effectively on this forum so best if you take the time to read through those before you buy and use the software.

I must disagree with you.... Until it will come an update that will remove backlinks from the equation SB is still working if you know how to do it and adapt your strategy each time.

I am planning on using whatever software I acquire to build pyramids which will all end up pointing at different niche specific links I already have. Is it possible that the algorithm catches this now as well?
