How to make your site blazing fast with amazon S3 service.

Some of you are probably using shared hosting servers, or VPS, and even ramping up the traffic. You will eventually hit a point where your server is maxed-out, CPU is at 100% or even 500%!

You think it's time to move servers. But wait, there is another solution.

I recently spread the load using Amazon S3 service. No links, just google it. It allows you to easily upload your static files like your IMAGES, JS files, and even CSS.

The benefits:

1. S3 It's always fast.
2. Very easy to upload files (remember to make them public)
3. Pay-as-you-go, no commitments if you stop using it, you stop paying for it
4. You end up making more money because your visitors can open your site faster, this will reduce the bounce rate.
5. You keep your hosting and save a lot of work moving.

S3 is great though not for all traffic types since anything with a low rate of return from a high number of visitors can start to add up in network fees -- mostly very image heavy sites

I like to setup individual sub-domains for each site and spread out around different data centers to reduce footprint so end up with links that look like

SITE1.aws-west-1 / SITE2.aws-east-1

there are also plugins available for most major CMS's (wordpress / drupal / ...) to place uploaded content onto S3 as well for you

two other good resources for web development and running your site are;

cloudflare - Security and caching of your site - reduces server load, your site will never go down, will increase speed of your site
dropbox - great for sharing files between computers or with staff instantly

Or you could use Amazon Elastic Beanstalk to host the entire site.

also almost forgot that Amazon offers a free tier for new accounts -- 1 year 15GB storage + some bunch of bandwidth and an option for a micro-server

i love amazon s3. hosted my first ever site on it. bought a .info domain for $2 and pointed it to an index.html file in a s3 bucket. $0.17 cents a month for hosting that was super fast with 99.99% uptime. ahh, good times

Well if you have wordpress, there is a plugin for it called WT3C. Thats the easy way.
(in there is an option to enable cloud servers for load balancing etc).

Personally i suggest staying away from CloudFlare, as in my experience it blocks many website visitors.

It depends on how much http requests and data / bandwidth you intend to use.
It is free for a year for new clients but i dont remember the terms. Google it.

BHW now uses a CDN "content delivery network" with nimbushosting

Forum owners need a CDN to get images etc out to its users much quicker.
Just picture instead of having one mechanic working on a car, with a CDN you now have 3.

My site is faster than Amazon's. My VPS is on a cloud node running Debian x64 and Fast CGI with 16gb of ram. It beats the pants of Amazons S3 im afraid.

I am using Cloud Server for my service site with CDN and i really think it takes max 1 second to load entire site even on a pretty low connection. @op feels this is best for user's using shared hosting who can afford hosting upto $50 per month.
