How I Bought An iPad and MADE $1,650!

And who is signing your papers? Obviously you can't sign any papers even if your state's law allows you to own a company.

Legally it is co-signed with my parents, as is the company.

What a dimwit! Even if the OP's parents are co-signing the papers, who says that you have to be 18 to have a successful business??

I started selling surplus/overstock items door-to-door when I was 8 years old. Bought and sold everything in my own name. When I was 13 I had a photography 'company', taking pictures of businesses and their facilities. My seven-year old has his own vending machine business with quarter operated candy machines in several local stores. I drive him around and he does everything else.

In all of these cases when a 1099 was received, taxes were/are paid as an individual as sole proprietor. IRS doesn't care how old you are for that. And business was/is done on a handshake, no contracts.

Age and ability based limitations are only figments of feeble minds.

Wow, that's awesome. Is that a video from one of the restaurants you did or is it just a mock up video of what the restaurants video will look like?

That was the mock-up video I showed them.

The video looks good and I'm sure that idea would work, but those pictures look they are professional, so if you took them yourself then good job, but I don't think most people can take pictures of that quality. Many restaurants do have professional photos already, and you may be able to assemble them into a video for them for a lower cost. I used to do free video walkthroughs of the bars and nightclubs around my college town, just to generate traffic for my blogs. People always seemed to like the videos, even if they were dimly lit, etc. It can really help you get a the feel for a place.

iPad's are great for presentation so I know that part definitely works and wows customers. And if they see you have an iPad, it does give you some panache. I use one for when I present offline stuff, like my mobile websites. Sometimes I run a video presentation, and speak as they watch it, show them graphs and charts etc. A tip I have for you though, is to hand the client the iPad instead of holding it yourself or putting it up on a table. This allows them to really focus on it.

that is good have you thought of using animoto for the videos?

Digital SLR Camera's give great pictures in my opinion.

Especially if the restaurants have good lighting then it will look awesome on camera.

If you want to try it then be professional like tubeincreaser and get an SLR not a digital compact camera as they're not expensive (Depending on which one you buy). Obviously you dont need a high end one just something like a Cannon EOS or Nikon is good :)

Yup, you can buy a Nikon D40 if you don't want to buy an expensive SLR. It wil get the job done and give you a credibility factor.

I have, but their reseller costs are expensive and iMovie can make just as good "movies" for $70 total.

Forgot to respond to this. Another spin to this is you could just use a camcorder, or a Flip and record the restaurant and use that and mix it with the pictures. It will help the customers visualize what it actually is.

As for the iPad, I will open up the video, hand them the iPad and press play. It helps a lot with the credibility aspect and makes them engaged because they have to hold it.

It's strange how a little thing like that can have a dramatic effect. I noticed the that when the business owner held it, his attention was so much more focused on the video.

Yup, gives him some sense of power too that he is holding my marketing tools. Works wonders :)

Sidenote, that video made me a Youtube advertiser.

So did you have an appointment setup with the owners in advance? Or did you just walk in and ask to speak to a manager? I would imagine it going like this:

Hi may I speak to the manager?

Hi there I wanted to come in and talk to you about a unique advertising method that will get you many more customers to your restaurant. Please take a look at this sample video I have made (hand them iPad). I can place your logo and pictures in and then I will upload it to YouTube so you can have maximum exposure.

This all will only cost 400 dollars and I can have it uploaded by tomorrow.

Is this about what you did?

Such an inspiring venture.
OP, i think we would all love it if you could update us maybe weekly and see how you progress.

Chris

its funny, i had a similar (almost exact) idea. But I am a pro- animator/3d artist/editor. But if i could just smack a imovie template on it , it could save me so much time. I dont have an ipad. but i have an HP touchpad lol. Just as good for video. Im going to try this. I wonder if they'll shell out 450 lol. that'll be funny. but def gonna try!

P.S please update

Did This Today ( Litterally like 2 hours ago). CLOSED on my first try ! I also upselled to some social media/website management.

Great job man! Yeah I just walked in holding the iPad and I had an SLR (Nikon D60) in the car ready to take the pictures. I also offered it up when I ate at a place worked well. I still do this whenever I visit a restaurant, but I have moved on to a lot bigger things since then. Signed a near 6 figure contract recently, still have my offline marketing company that I still run, but it has not my main focus right now.

Young grasshopper, at this rate you will make your first million by the time you are 21.

Let's say I'm a restaurant owner and after you tell me you're going to make this beautiful video and put it up on youtube for $450, my question to you will be how's that going to help my business? People looking for a place to eat don't go searching in youtube. Maybe you left out a few more details because I can't believe this question was never put to you before.
