Are there "good" and "bad" backlinks?

So I'm reading up about backlinks, and I'm just wondering if there are "good" ones and "bad" ones, or are some more valuable than others?

If I understand correctly, one would want more backlinks so your search engine rank will be higher. So does it matter where they're from?

Yeah there are good and bad backlinks.

Most of the bad ones are available in the sales sections of internet forums such as Warrior forum, and other forums such as this one.

There are good ones around, but they are difficult to find. The bad ones are easy to find because they are low quality but there are more of them available.

You're better off with one good link from a great website than you are with hundreds of rubbish links.

Good back links are links from sites that are relevant to your niche. However links from pages that are off-topic can also help your rankings just not as much. I have heard of google giving penalizations for links from sites that are mostly just spammed links so do keep that in mind.

You will get very few providers who offer good links .... most of them would offer you good and give you bad ones at the time of delivery.. this is out of my personal experience.

There is no such thing as bad backlinks. There is a possibility for bad results if you would be getting 100% of your backlinks from malware infected sites, i'm saying 'a possibility' since this is obviously not a real world scenario and as such i have never tested this.

It would be nice if people here would not speak up with their opinion based on absolutely nothing, on a SEO forum you would assume people would do extensive testing on certain matters, and i dont mean playing around with a few domains, but real seo testing setups, unfortunately, this is not the right forum for any SEO advise, as everybody and their mom just repeat what the other guy said.
I'd go as far as to say 98% of the SEO information on this forum is not based on anything but personal opinions, not hard data, and as such, is complete garbage.

Do you think you can rank this content first page on a website for competative keywords with JUST "bad" links?

I can assure you, you can, you could 4 years ago, and you can today.

There are only a few people who say quality content is king:

A: matt cutts
B: article sellers
C: people without a clue that repeat other clueless people

The idea isnt behind tons of backlinks anymore. You have to have CONTENT. Relative, UNIQUE content. As for back links and their "worth". A blog with low outbound links (~50), a decent PR (2+), and is do follow, is more valuable than a no follow link with the same credentials. However, you need SOME no follow/bad links to make your sites backlink profile look more diverse/natural. Build them in tiers. Money site <---web 2.0s <---- Social Bookmarks <----Wikis <----- Forum Profiles <----Press releases <-----SB blasts. Something like that there. Hope this helps some of you.

I think all backlinks are good except for links on PR 0 pages and sites and pages that have spam on them. Google knows and marks the sites that have spam on them so stay away from them, far away. Most of the time try to avoid getting no follow backlinks, even though getting no follow links on social media sites can prove to be helpful.

Of course the preference is always high PR sites with do follow and authority sites.

Usually when you pay someone for backlinks, they are 'bad ones'. When you go out and search for quality links and get them yourself...they are 'good ones'....generally speaking....

I'm very new to SEO but you can run the page where the backlink resides through a pagerank checker. If you use a search engine to search that term you will find several tools available. As far as I can tell, the pagerank of the domain is not important but the PR of the page itself is what matters.
