Being rich in the 3rd world

My wife is from the Dominican Republic. We took the leap five years ago and bought a sweet house in the town her mother lives at in a gated community with armed guards. 5 months ago we moved to the DR and I can say for the most part I love being here. I love the weather, family and the fact that we pay under $500 a month on all our bills including our full time maid.

But the work ethic here is minimal. They will promise you to have something tomorrow and you wont get it for a week. The empty promises of people here make it frustrating. We had a guy build us some furniture in which he said it was then to be done in a month. HAHAHA. It took us three months to get the furniture completed and this is not the best quality!

Now I am spoiled, our house is beautiful, we have security guards, a hot maid, gardeners, a swimming pool in the yard along with a guava, papaya, lemon , avocado, orange tree and a small garden growing. I want a fruit I pick it fresh of the tree. I want to make some lemon juice, I pick it off the tree. Our private subdivision has its own park for the kids along with a basketball court. We definitely live good.

Our power goes out every other day for a few hours but we have our own power supply that kicks on as soon as the power goes off. Internet is not the fastest here but all my work is done through my VPS in the states. We can't drink the water out of the faucet but we have 5 gallon water jugs delivered to our house every couple days. Some things that would get you in trouble in the states are no big deal here. I have every single satellite channel including PPV for $100 a year! I watched UFC150 the other night FREE.

We associate with well educated people her like doctors, lawyers and other business owners and never have any problems.

Wouldn't it be easier to get a good water filter,instead of having water delivered?
 
Most of the people from third world countries don't even know there exist the other side of the coin. So they are busy fighting to live day to day living. And it's not about starvation but they just can't relax.
 
I'm European and I live in the Philippines. Life is much cheaper here, thats why many people who work online prefer to live here. For a 5000 per month lifestyle in the US you can live it for 2000 here basicly half the cost
 
No, I don't trust them. If you use to much water it won't filter it properly and you can possibly get sick. I have had friends here that have been sick from drinking water out of their filter when they thought it was OK.

I live in India and make money sufficient to be called very comfortable in any of the first world nation. As many have pointed out living in a country like India you get lot of respect. Of course you need to be street smart here to protect your money but at the same time regardless of money you need to be street smart here. Many times in past I considered to migrate to a country like USA or Australia, however here are the pluses: A> In here my kids go to best private schools - Even though it costs huge here (like 4 K USD a year for primary) Equivalent schools in USA will cost a bomb. B> With money whenever I get bored of my country, I can travel to any of the nation stay there for 15-30 days and enjoy the life C> Here due to low labor cost, you spend $1000 a month on labors and you have private security guards, maid, cook, 24 hour driver, cleaner, sweeper and a personal servant. D> Respect - Having lived in USA for longer period of time, I am probably one of the few ones who give tips in the range of 10% (I know its on the lesser side, but in here its a huge amount). So waiters in every restaurant in town appreciates me, drivers appreciates me, sweeper on road side appreciates me. And most important, they talk good behind my back as well - That makes you feel happy. E> Social security. I know a time will come 30 year down the road when I will be too old. I know in here my kids will take care of me, if not my nephew or someone will stay with me and take care of me till I die :)

So these are all pluses. Of course minuses I dont need to tell, everyone knows. Thread was about being rich in third world nation :)
 
Oh the Dr knows what it is like to live on the other side of the coin. Quite a few work in the states for 6 months and do nothing for a year or so with the money. This is also a huge tourism industry here. They do know if your not from there. I always get asked for money. They always call me the Americano. My problem is not being busy! It is being to relaxed. They just don't care.. I think there philosophy is I will get to it when I get to it. There is no urgency to do anything here. If a party time is 7pm nobody shows up till 11pm.

How big is your house? How many bedrooms? Do you have a pool in the backyard? $500/month to live in a gated community....seems too good to be true.
 
Computer, internet, $100. Anyone can make money off that.
But a lot of people lack the resources or education. So they have an ever harder challenge 3 fold.
 
Well, I live in So Cali, where every other car is a jag. I dont even bother to break my neck looking at them....

I did live in KY for a few years and was driving a pretty nice sports car and seemed to get the job done with southern bells ;]
 
I have three bedrooms upstairs and a maid quarters downstairs. The house has nothing to do with our monthly expenses though since we bought this years ago. We do not have a house payment. The association dues are a little under a hundred dollars a month and covers the gardener and the security guards and the electricity for all the security alarms hooked up to the security office along with the lights outside at night.. This is split by the other 20 homeowners. Water is 13 dollars a month (flat fee), electricity is 70 dollars a month, our vehicles are paid for but we use gas $150 a month. We pay are maid $100 a month. (250 pesos a day) She gets here in the morning and leaves around 2, 4 days a week. We have family here that owns farmland and we have an abundance of vegetables and fruits along with our backyard.. We basically pay for meet to eat and we are good. This is give and take because sometimes we spoil ourselves but the average is five hundred dollars a month in bills.

Not sure what your questioning. I don't tell tales my man. Believe what you want. Her are a few pics. We actually go through the first gate with the security and pull up to our gated community within our gated community.

It's the people who come from 3rd world that end up doing better than everyone else as they put more work into it as they know their life depends on it.

I think your point is partly right. I have seen both sides of this coin. I have seen people like my wife come to the states and work her A** off. But it was not just her, we both had two jobs. We barely had anytime between each other. She managed a bagel shop, and was a teacher for years at the same time! I worked full time as AGR in the military and had a construction company on the side. (wasn't suppose to but I did anyway..) I literally had soldiers lined up when I needed some extra workers. It was like my own temp service.. We both were driven to get were we are today. But I also have seen people come to the states looking for handouts. Those people don't get anywhere!
