Social Exchange Sites - good or bad?

A while back (before Penguin) I joined several social exchange sites to boost my +1 points for free.

After Penguin, I'm apprehensive about this kind of thing and still unclear on what might be safe and what isn't.

We all know social signals are valuable but can be difficult to obtain naturally sometimes, so a Social Exchange tool is extremely useful, but is it still safe?

Can anyone with experience using social exchange sites shed light on this and whether it is safe to use?

it depends. If the site (social exchange site) is too fast, or very aggressive, it may not be useful and sometimes, make it worse. But if the site is good and not so aggressive, based on my experience, it will help you.

Its pointless.

People use fake accounts on thoses sites which yields fake results. If your content isnt worth being naturally social, then concentrate on making it that way.

Most of the profiles are fake. They are only good if you sell likes, on fiverr for example.
