Why the f@ck is Google indexing the same link twice!?

when i do site:url.com

i get the normal post

url.com/a-totally-normal-post <---like this

then i get the irregular post

url.com/a-totally-normal-post?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=a-totally-normal-post <---like this


so i do my research to find out that some message board has grabbed my rss feed and is indexing the feed correct?

?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign= <----so will google slap me for duplicate content?

There are some rules and regulations to do the things.
But if you do it one way and you expect it to happen differently then it is a different matter.

can you elaborate on that? i haven't done anything but tweeted, shared on facebook, used tumblr, a couple of message board posts...and submitted my feed to a few directories...what do you mean?

Disallow the undesired URLs using robots.txt. You may want to go into Google WMT and manually remove those pages too. Duplicate content will definitely harm your SERPS, but is not a "penalty" in the normal sense as you can easily correct it.

As long as you're not doing anything against Google TOS you should be fine and with time Google will de-index the unnecessary URL, at least from my experience.

The urls you are no longer linking to will need to return 404 or 410 or at least be blocked using a robots noindex meta tag or be disallowed in robots.txt .
Perhaps best would be to 301 redirect them to whatever urls you like to have (whil of course not using them anywhere, just the final destinaiton urls).

Otherwise they will continue existing in the index since they already got indexed, and since they are shorter than the ones with dates, yet apparently returning the same content, they will likely be favored for
indexing.

UPDATE:

I have been hit with the "duplicate title tags" for the RSS feed situation. I did a robots.txt and disallowed the entire /feed like that. is that helpful or harmful? i'm also going to disallow ?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=.So this should save me right? where do i add the canonical tags in wordpress?

I think canonical can work here as well if you are using wordpress it can be simply done.
