What is SMTP relay? How is it different than non-relay?

My client has an old school oScommerce site, and over the years, he has collected a bunch of client details etc.
Its a list of around 1500-2000. Nothing massive.

He is thinking of sending weekly newsletter to them now; However, that site never had a double-opt-in or aweber form (or whatever) integrated. What are his option now?

I see that there are some discussions about using GoDaddy relay service, etc
How reliable are they? Whats SMTP relay all about? Do all hosts have SMTP relay?

SMTP relay is basically SMTP server and yes, most of the web hosts have it. I'd suggest you to try out http://smtp.com they are good and their prices are good too.

The site is hosted with hostgator; and the domain is also pointed to there.
If I use smtpdotcom, how does that work? will i be able to change the 'from address' or something?

How's smtpdotcom different than other hosting providers with smtp relays?

Yes, you are able to do it. You can use your Hostgator's cPanel emails as well.. I'm sure there are tutorials out there that teach how to use cPanel SMTP server.

with hostgator you can send 500 emails per hour , so just split the list into 3-4 parts and send one part each hour with thebat or Thunderbird...Cafeful though, HG has a zero tolerance with spam complaints, I would not do this if you've got your money sites on this hosting

Beside hostgator, any other options?
I also read about getting a VPS for newsletter purpose etc, is that a wiser choice?

With that small of list, I would load them to Constant Contact and not worry with the problems of having your own server. As long as he has records, he will be good.

They may ask when did you last mail to them and tell them it was May 2012.
