I wasn't sure where to put this but feel free to move it, sticky it, or delete it as the Mods see fit. I have seen a few people asking what this means or that means so I decided it would be nice if we had a Terms of Reference thread.

Ajax ~ Asynchronous JavaScript and XML. A method of creating web sites with more functionality than standard HTML
ASCII ~ American Standard Code for Information Interchange. Is the way that letters, numbers and other symbols are encoded and stored inside the computer where numbers represent each alphanumeric character.
API ~ Application Programming Interface. Is a method of communication used by sites. An example would be the Google API which allows you to tap into some of the information generated by Google.
ASP ~ Active Server Pages. This was Microsoft's first venture into creating active server pages.
B2B ~ Business To Business. Refers to a business that serves other businesses rather than individual customers.
CMS ~ Content Management System. Good examples of CMS based websites are Joomla and Drupal.
CPA ~ Cost Per Action. Refers to a way of getting a website visitor to take a particular action for which you would get paid.
CPC ~ Cost Per Click. A good example would be Adwords where you would be charged everytime someone clicks on your advert.
CPI ~ Cost Per Impression. Similar to CPC but the charge is levied each time the ad is shown rather than clicked. |Usually calculated in thousands.
CRO ~ Conversion Rate Optimisation. In other words getting your site to convert more customers by using split testing or (Tagamuchi) multivariat testing.
CSS- Cascading Style Sheets - It's a language use to style webpages. (Intruder)
Domain ~ The actual name of your website i.e. www.blackhatworld.com
DNS ~ Domain Name System (also Do Not Share on BHW) is a way of translating an IP address into a Domain Name
Doorway Pages ~ Is a way of creating pages automatically, which show one type of content to the website visitor and another to the search engines. Doorway pages are usually created in hundreds or even thousands and based around a large keyword list.
DP ~ Digital Point. An inferior forum in every possible way.
EMD ~ Exact Match Domain. i.e. if your chosen keyword was "baby clothes" then the EMD would be www.babyclothes.com (or .org or .net, etc)
FTP ~ File Transfer Protocol. A way of transferring files to your website. You can download ftp programs like Cute FTP to upload files and web pages.
GUI ~ Graphical User Interface. The part of a piece of software that you can see and interact with.
Host or Hosting. ~ The place where you store your website so that it can be seen on the internet. Note: the first page you want people to see should be called index.php or index.htm or index.html or default.php etc.
HTML ~ Hypertext Markup Language. The way that web pages are written to be displayed correctly on the web (or rather in a browser)
IM ~ Internet Marketing. The thing that you should be doing instead of reading this rubbish.
KPI ~ Key Performance Indicator. Measurable factors which are indicative of an ad campaign's effectiveness. Popular KPIs to measure include: Driving traffic, branding, data collection, direct action, conversion, redemption, acquisition, units sold, return visitors, unique visitors, length of visit, and depth of visit.
LP ~ Landing Page. The page that visitors land on from some kind of traffic driving campaign.
MNS ~ Micro Niche Site. Think of a niche like "guitar", now break that down into sub niches like "guitar lessons", "guitar strings", now break this down into micro niches like "bronze guitar strings", "nickel guitar strings". Now build a website around your micro niche and use adsense or clickbank to monetise it. If a MNS makes you a dollar a day then 1,000 of them would make you $1,000 a day.
OBL ~ Outbound Links. Hyperlinks on your page that point to other websites.

OPL ~ Other Peoples' List. A way of profiting from a list without actually having an email list yourself.
OS ~ Operating System. The program that manages your computer, software, peripherals, etc. Usually Windows XP, ME, 7, or for others Linux, Ubuntu, etc.
PHP ~ Personal Home Page. A way of generating web pages dynamically. Imagine you have a website with 2,000 pages. Each time you update the menu you would have to rewrite those 2,000 pages. If the website was written in PHP you would write the menu once as a seperate page and then use the INCLUDE command to add it to each page making your task much simpler.
PPC ~ Pay Per Click. A form of advertising like Adsense where you are charged a fee each time someone clicks on your ad.
PR ~ Page Rank. A method used by Google to rank your site. Rank can be anywhere from N/A (less than 0) to 10
RSS ~ Real Simple Syndication. A way of sharing content from blogs and websites with other users.
ROI ~ Return On Investment. If you spend $50 on advertising and make $250 in profit you would have a ROI of 400% i.e. $250 - $50 investment.
SEM ~ Search Engine Marketing. Similar to SEO but more focused on the actual selling process than just making sites appear higher in the search engines.
SEO ~ Search Engine Marketing. A method of optimising a website to appear as high as possible in the search engines.
SERP ~ Search Engine Results Page. When you type something in Google, all of the results returned can be jointly termed the SERPs.
TLD ~ Top Level Domain. The very top level of a website i.e. before any /'s
