Keyword Research Issue, can someone explain this?

I did some keyword research using google keywords tool and free version of traffic travis last week. Found some good buying keywords, for a website I want to set up, with low SEO competition. I went back and checked these keywords 2 days ago and everything had changed many went from being 'relatively easy' to rank (according to Traffic Travis) to 'medium difficulty' or 'difficult'. Quite a change in just a few days. Have checked them again today and many of them have changed again.

I don't whether I should be targeting these keywords or staying well clear, they seem so volatile!

What's going on here, how can the SEO competition change so rapidly in a short space of time? How can they be easy keywords to rank one day, difficult the next and then easy the day after?

I can't see how that could happen, it may change slightly but not massively. Personally I prefer Market Samurai, you have to interpret the data yourself but that is much better in the long run.

They've changed 3 times in a week. Going back and forth from 'relatively easy' to 'medium' to 'difficult'.

I was surprised when I first did the research on them that such obvious buying keywords were not already being targeted by everyone in this niche. It would be the first keywords you think of.

I just want to know the answer.

I don't really focus on what they say about the difficulty. I check the backlinks, backlinks to the domain, PR of ranks 1-5, the age, and how many matches there are in the Title, H1, Description, and if it is an EMD or not. Are any of these changing?

I'm not sure, I'll have to go have a more detailed look at them and then look again tomorrow and compare to see if there's been any changed.

As stated in the original post using FREE version of TT, did NOT buy. I didn't consider that it might be an issue with the software, I was wondering if this was simply something that happened with keywords, the competition changing all the time for some reason?

Well, do that and get back to me. I don't think those will change. If they do, check the websites that are ranking on multiple sources. Try ahrefs to start with.

I'm confident I've done everything correctly and have done it exactly the same each time.

Market samurai is better and more accurate, try it for free. Also don't forget to use US in the settings if you are targeting the us google results.

did you check same country and top10/20 each time? Just take a screenshot of the results so you can compare if sth actually changed(not sure if you can export the result in the free version.

Yeah I've always been checking for US.

I'm going to check it again today and see if there's any change from yesterday in SEO competition and whether anything else has changed.

I would definitely start comparing the actual serps each time you check the keyword to see if anything has changed. Google did just roll out a new Panda update so I guess the results could still be dancing a bit? Only other thought is if you are using proxies and the keyword in question could should different results based on location of the proxies

Not using proxies so could be a google dance. I checked just the competition level today and there had been a change with just one of the keywords from yesterday, I'll do a another check again tomorrow that's more indepth and see what the outcome is. I would actually be very surprised if these keywords I've found are easy to rank with so low competition as traffic travis is telling me as it's quite a saturated market and these are prime, obvious, buying keywords. It should literally be the first thing anyone doing keyword research looked for.
