My competitor has 96,877 total links...

Don't listen to this ^ TERRIBLE advice! That's crap hat tinfoil hat SEO.

They only have 2000 linking root domains according to that picture there. Plan on surpassing these guys in a year with consistent quality content and quality backlinks.

Build your site for your visitors but link build along the way. There is no over night victory to be had here.

Perhaps you could explain why you think this advice is so "^ TERRIBLE" ?

I guess it's time to tell that it's not the number of links that make the site #1 or #10...

Uh.. Yes. Yes it is. You think it's possible for a website with 1 backlink to outrank a website with 1 million? You need good quality backlinks, high authority backlinks, and some average quality backlinks to even them out. Saying the number of backlinks doesn't make a site #1 is ridiculous.

Happy to.

having 50,000 backlinks is a HUGE problem.

No it isn't. 50k SPAMMY backlinks is a problem. SEOMoz, for example, has 302k links.

Read about Penguin. Don't do any backlinking.

No backlinking only applies to people who have been hit with penalties and are looking to fix the problems. In this case he needs to do safe backlinking to improve his current situation.

great advice guys. Looks like I have some work to do.

And yes it is seomoz. Great software, I have had it for a few days and I think I will stay with them.

I have a website with 0 backlink ranking for a keyphrase of 3 words, it's #1 on G for those keywords and #2 is....(rolling drums)...amazon.com for that words...

EDIT: I just check. Amazon.com is #3 now, food.com is now #2. I'm still #1. It is a food product.

I'm wondering how many backlinks has amazon.com or food.com??

SEOMoz is the single-most well-known SEO company on the planet. The fact they can do it doesn't mean the OP can. Just because something looks easy does not mean that it is.

The "terrible" no backlinking advice applies to people that only know enough to be dangerous, i.e. get themselves de-indexed because they think that achieving rank is about the number of links, and more is better. There's no guarantee that Penguin is "over", and that everyone that survived it is now safe to do whatever they want. That 50,000 link competitor's site could be on page 12 tomorrow. The OP needs to learn quite a bit about the methods and risks involved before doing any active backlinking.

I like what pathart had to say, "The number of backlinks isnt all that matters, its about the quality of those backlinks, how many unqiue IPs they come from and many other factors. Try and build long lasting backlinks (not spamming blog comments/ forum profiles) and they we will stick.". The reason I like this is because it is 100% accurate! Do links matter? Absolutely! Is it the only thing that does?!? NO!

However, your company that you work for needs to understand that they need to significantly invest in the long term growth of the website and not look for short cuts. In the end, the slow and steady growth of a site that attracts and keeps real people, is going to win... Therefore, not saying you are, stop focuing on your competition as the benchmark to beat, but decide now, what kind of online presence you want to have and go for that!

Maybe, in another year, you will have 100,000 more links and they will too, but then you will always be behind them... But, if you focus on adding value to your customers experience and create content that inspires people to act, buy or whatever... That will never fail.

Finally, you need to set yourself up for success wherever you are... if you feed into the focus that # of back-links it the best metric, then you will be fired quicker than you knew what hit you.

I truly hope this helped!

Shawn

how much is the software? look good!!

I had one client who had 86,000 links. About 96% of the links came from the same footer link on a relevant site that they paid for every month....

...and he got penalized for no anchor text variation. Quantity isn't everything.

Good job. Quality backlinks will make all the difference. You can outrank with <1000 quality links.
