free wordpress forum plugin that works with free addons

Hi All,

Im fairly new here, but have searched the forums for recent information on the above subject. Unfortunately it all seems to be out of date.


Therefore, I am looking for some upto date info.


I want a forum plugin that works well, is simple to use, but also has alot of free add-ons or other plugins to compliment it. I was looking at simple press, but found that you have to pay for alot of add-ons and the same with other forum plugins.


So can someone just give me the pros and cons of the forums plugins that they have used and what the limitations are of each.

You can use bbpress, it's free and works like a charm

I have been trying BBPress out but the formatting of the forum looks rubbish compared to mingle and wp forum server. I like a traditional forum look.

BBpress seems to have problems displaying properly on themes other than the bbpress standard theme. I have many custom themes that work fine with mingle and wp forum server, but I would like the functionality and extensive free plugins that bbpress offers.

As I am not a coder I use a program to make custom themes which work perfectly in all other situations, but not with bbpress.

How could I make bbpress look like standard mingle theme/skin and format correctly on the page.
