say that a guy named bob owns the name of a domain well call it "johnnyappleseed(d-o-t)(c-o-m)"he was going to make a cartoon or whatever off the same name and then he lost faith in it and never ended up making it and essentially just parking the domain or whatever.

then one day an up and coming singer becomes really successful and his name is johnny appleseed...johny writes bob and asks him if hed be willing to sell the domain. bob agrees but bob also knows how badly johnny wants and needs the domain so he decides to hike up the price to astronomical unreasonable proportions

so in the end johnny is screwed unless he forks over a huge amount of money.

is there anything that johnny can do in this scenario? what would you do if you were Johnny? thanks

If I was Johnny I would take my losses and walk.
I don't think you can force somebody to sell you anything unless you own his ass.
The previous owner of amsterdam.nl had a porn site on it till the city council bought it for an astronomical amount so it seems even the government would have some problems acquiring it for a reasonable price.

Johnny could however use a straw man a few months later perhaps but if the owner of the site has any brains...
Or, Johnny could look for a dot org or something instead of the dot com and take the easy way out?

Hope this helps but feel free to ignore as you see fit.

Johny is screwed. The only way johny could get it, would be to prove that the Bob intentionally made the domain to profit off of Johny which is not what happened in your scenario.

You are very welcome. :)

I translated the concept of straw man incorrectly into English, or the wiki gives me another definition than I meant it to have. lol

What I meant by straw man is just a go-between.
You, ahem, Johnny let's Bob know he doesn't want the site any more since the price is too high. If Bob wants to lower the price to a more reasonable level he should contact Johnny.
Some time later a friend of Johnny calls Bob to ask about the website. He does not know Johnny and is poor, has a sick grandmother....
After acquiring the website the friend passes it to Johnny and everybody is happy again.

I hope that makes more sense to you. :)

he may want a large amount of money but he'll probably take a much smaller one when it's on the table in front of him.

If I knew I was about to sign a major record deal and had marketing/backing I might pay a bit of a hiked up fee for the simple johnnyappleseed domain.

If the name really is like in the example ("Johnny Appleseed"), and would have other connotations/connections (the folk-tale, etc) you could use something like johnnyappleseedmusic

Actually, that's probably the one I would use. It's even got "music" as a keyword, eh?

Alternatives could be something like therealjohnnyappleseed (seems long...but maybe for a shorter name.....) or johnnyappleseedsinger

Funny... I've had to edit this post like 5 times, since it won't let me post the letters SEE OH EMM following anything that looks like a URL. lol
