pc help - network adapter missing

my pc was connected via ethernet cable, roommates pc was connected wireless. my wireless adapter is not installed.
a thunderstorm yesterday fried my modem.
got a new modem. internet works fine when directly connected from modem to roommates pc. internet does not work when connected from modem to my pc.

go into network connections on my computer and nothing is there.
so im guessing there is a problem with the eithernet connection port on my computer?

any one know how to fix this issue? thank you for any help!

If your router/modem was not connected to a power surge protector (although this isn't a 100% guaranteed protection) during the lightning strike that fried your modem, it's likely your network card and/or PCI slot was cooked. To rule out other issues, I'd recommend reinstalling your network adapter driver. If that does not work it's a good chance you will need to purchase a new network card and use a different PCI slot on your motherboard.

Are there any Green/Yellow/Red lights flashing where the Ethernet cable meets the port?

the light is a steady green when it is connected and not connected to the eithernet cable.
trying to reinstall the driver now...im a little lost
i have an acer. went here http://support.acer.com/product/default.aspx?modelId=2193 and downloaded the "LAN Driver"

i have windows7 64 bit, so i went to vista_win7>x64...now i see 6 files and im not sure what to do



so how do i get the driver installed at that point?

also, the reason i was hooked up to an ethernet cable was i never got around to installing the wireless driver after my last reformat (bc of malware)

if my LAN port is fried, is it still possible to install the wireless adapter or would that be toast too?

I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say your Ethernet port is toast. The wireless adapter may or may not work at this point (but likely not).

To reinstall the driver find the .INI file that matches your network cards model (should be either b57 or k57 according to the picture), right click and choose 'Install'. You could also use the control panel to add new hardware, and use the driver folder as your search point. This should pick up the correct file.

When you purchase a new network card, there is a good chance you will need to install it into a new PCI slot (make sure to check if your system has any available beforehand of course).

ive tried to install both files shown in the screen shot and i get a "the inf file you selected does not support this method of installation"

could you be more specific on this "you could also use the control panel to add new hardware, and use the driver folder as your search point."
i get what you are saying but can't figure out how to get my computer to preform this action

1. reinstall the driver, to see if it's fried or not

Your onboard LAN Port/chip is fried.
Dont bother reinstalling drivers/etc.

goto your BIOS settings and deactivate ONBOARD LAN.

Buy a PCI LAN card for 15$ off ebay or use any 15$ USB WLAN card.
It will work.

In 98% cases windows 7 will already have the driver for the USB WLAN.
otehrwise just insert the driver CD you got when you purchased your WLAN card.

always have ups and dont connnect pc ,adapter all directly.The other pc will be blocked i guess from network,allow access to it and you are able to connect to it
