SEO NOOB - Help / Guidance Wanted!

Hey Guys,

I really hope I don't get yelled at for not finding the answers myself (I did look however, but it can be overwhelming when you don't know where to start), but basically I'm hoping someone can point me in the right direction to find a BEGINNERS GUIDE to SEO. Both my brothers have told me to look into SEO because they think I would be really good at it, so I'd like to look into it. It would probably benefit my own site to have it SEO optimized, and would be helpful to eventually offer SEO optimized sites to clients in the future.

Maybe there's a really great thread for beginners, or a YT video (and I apologize if this should be easy to find on my own), or something, but anyone who can point me in the right direction would be much appreciated!

Any chance someone can tell me the difference between Black Hat and White Hat, and what they even mean? :\

you are most likely trying to rank on google, so it is best to read what they have to say about seo.

Take a look at searchenginelands and seomozs beginner guides. They're whitehat, btw, but they'll give you a good idea for on-page optimization.

I would probably prefer white hat seo anyway if it's going to benefit me in the long run, since the first place I will implement it all is on my own site.

I woulda posted in white hat section if I knew the difference before making the thread xD

Exactly, the more you read, the more you will pick up on all of the terminology that is used and that is crucial.

Here's a suggestion: Don't try to learn seo, try to understand it. It's more intuitive and common sense than anything else.
