I'm no see expert but I've been doing a little testing on some of my sites since the penguin update and I have noticed that there are lots on inner pages ranking and lots of searches returning multiple pages in the SERPS

It seems that Google has changed the value of a link, a site that had say 300 links from with no teir 2's is not a powerful as maybe a site with 100 links and 2 or 3 teirs pointing at them

This seems to be the same with the pages within your own site, I send links to an inner pages and the pages that have been linked to from this page start to show up in the SERPS for my keywords too

That might be why bigger site with lots of inner links get multiple pages for one search

I recovered a site (very low comp) by building bookmarks 4 tiers high with only about 30 pointing at my home page

Would love to see if anyone else is seeing the same results!!

Think i'll have test at ranking a few inner pages on a new website just created, will post back results and see how it go's.

i will suggest you, remove inner page link means anchor text, no link in inner page, if you want rank only main page so only optimize only main page.

So in other words we shouldn't put any links pointing to the inner pages or what?
Sorry didn't understand this.

you were using quality bookmarks for your 1st tier(digg, stmbl, etc?)? also what kind of 2nd,3rd and 4th tier did you have?
trying to recover from the penalty on my ecommerce site...
