Hey,
I looked around and couldn't find any similar questions so thought i might ask.
Well i just got a MBP and my brother has a MBP (Macbook Pro). I've been in IM for a while and he wants to do something with me, his a good artist and im a quick learner. I was thinking maybe he could improve in Photoshop/Illustrator and i could learn web code. Is there much money in this combination?
Thanks

Selling Templates, maybe

Consulting websites offering Advertisment Layouts, Videos, Custom made Templates, SEO and Offline Marketings you bet there is :D

There is a lot of money in it, but if you are going in it because of money, you will not get too far.

There's absolutely no money in web design or coding. It'd be impossible to find any clients for the millions of companies that want websites.

On a more serious note, yes there is money to be made by getting clients. You don't want clients from BHW though unless you live in India or another country where $300 USD will pay your monthly bills. Everyone I've had contact me/I contact them expect a highly customized website for less than ~$500. Also, you'll need to familiarize yourself with platforms and get a niche. Mine is ecommerce. Others can be forums, ticketing, games, SaaS, membership etc.

He's right if you just over coded sites you will work hard and earn near to nothing, but if you offer more clients will come to you and pay.

It's about what you offer and why they need you.

Also if before you start with your first client do the following steps:

(Assuming you will take Wordpress as plattform)

1. Get used to the following Wordpress Plugins
- Contact Form 7
- WP-Cache
- WP-Touch
- Wassup

2. Get some third person and ask their opinions about your site.
(seriously, you will be awake alot in the evenings and working on code, since you nearrly can't conentrate during the day)

3. Read some hours on clientsfromhell.net
(this will save you alot of problems)

Stay realistic and hones.

and you will be successful

May be sell wordpress template. Most of blogger use wordpress. I think it's good way to make money.

If there s still money in selling flip-flops or dead sea species or custom cloth hangers, there is definitely money in design.
Local websites can be made for 600-1200. And if you build good portfolio and be loyal to your clients you will get referrals. Local businesses come and go so in my city there are thousands new businesses open every year so the niche is profitable. I dont do much design and dont advertise, just to friends but every now and then i get recommended to "friend's cousin's neighbor"

So yea try to make money from design, its not easy but you can make a lot if you know what you are doing!!!!

Custom platforms sell as high as $100,000 per project, but finding a client that will pay you that much is a pain in the ass. He should know you personally, and trust you.

Not any money but sure money with this combination hope you both do well all the best !

Don't and i mean simple dont rely on only websites sales, check the offline section. You will make more money when you offer more than just websites, there are websites like sand in the sea, but if you can show your clients that, that you offer something special. They will buy your shit..

You sir are very, very wrong. Hell, I've probably made ~$30k within the last year just doing small coding jobs for friends and such (and I'm not even a freelancer). The combination of people not knowing what the value of something is and needed something done in a timely manner (with secure code) makes for a goldmine.

The biggest hump you'll have to overcome is marketing yourself to make you seem like the right company to go with as opposed to the Indian/Pakistani on whatever freelance site that put in a bid for the same job for like, $13 USD as opposed to the more realistic budget of ~$800-$1,200. On that note I should probably mention that western clients typically dislike dealing with programmers/designers outside of Western countries mainly because of the quality of the code. I mean hell, I've had to fix some pretty bad desi code before. I mean like, REALLY bad. eval()-ing $_GET's, bad. It wasn't even a backdoor - the dude was legit passing in "echo('login failed')" into &code={herpderp}.

To answer your question, yes. It is VERY easy to do so long as you're either a good designer or a good programmer. It's slightly harder if you're a wordpress warrior, but for some reason clients love CMS's and Wordpress stuff.

and you fail at reading comprehension. Sarcasm.
I went on to say there is money to be made, and I do ecommerce sites. If there was no money to be had, why would I do it?

All I said in regards to not making money is getting clients from BHW because they suck.

Hey thanks for everyones answers.
What kind of things in Photoshop/Illustrator should i focus on? Like wheres the money at? Logos?
I do actually enjoy graphic designing did a bit a while ago and im pretty decent with it, if i could improve and make a little money of it i would be pretty happy.
Thanks

Setup an account on Fiverr, logo makers on there seem to have backlogs of orders!

You can design anything and make money, you just need to price appropriately to your skill level and perceived value. Logos can fetch $100 easily (if your good), $2000 (lucky) or $5 (if your bad or dont know pricing.) Other design jobs include banners, renders, mascots, icons, layouts, fonts, backgrounds.

FYI, when you're doing logos always do it in illustrator as a vector. Doing it in photoshop as a raster will get you lots of chargebacks and complaints.

Thanks for that info. Where could i sell this service? My own site?
haha and really $100 easy for a logo? That seems awfully pricey.
Thanks in advanced

There are good logos and bad logos. The bad ones are normally cheap (<$15), usable ones at about $20-$40, ok ones at $40-$80 and good ones at $100->$250. The lower quality ones tends to be premade logo services (they just reuse everything but put your name on it) or a horrible designer. I personally never buy logos for less than $30.

For where to sell, normally your own website but you can also go to forums like webhostingtalk and sell there. They have specific spots for designers. Other places would be ecommerce forums. Selling locally is also profitable.

You must be kidding me. There is ton of money in there. I know a few wordpress designers and they make 1000-1200$
per custom theme.

There is one more thing you need to show the prospective client this important, humorous, and easy to understand site:

And, quality writer too..for quality copywriting results.

See here on dealing with quality writers vs crap writers

Hope this info is helpful.
