So when you experts put up a new website, what are some of the automatic things you do with it right away? My routine in the past has been to ping it using a bulk ping service, then put it on about 17 social bookmark sites.

Is there more I could be doing though? I'm on vacation for the next week so I have all the time I need... I'm just wondering what else I can do to help this site along.

I don't think pinging a site accomplishes anything.

1) H1 tags
2) optimize filepathnames
3) optimize content for kw's
4) compress images
5) run various website testers

Which social bookmark sites?

Pinging doesn't accomplish anything? I've always read on here that you should do it right away when you start a new site. What makes you say that it doesn't do anything?

I go through this SocialMarker.com.

Can you recommend any good website testers? What exactly does it do?

In case of WP:

(but this can be also made prior to the site to be finished):

- Install Google xml site map and build the sitemap (it automatically notify se's, and update itself)
- Make social profiles for the site (facebook fanpage, twitter, stumbleupon, etc)
- Install a social sharing plugin.

Pinging just pokes Google and tells it to come see what you just did. Like that annoying kid at the pool yelling at their dad to watch them jump in.

Like everyone else said, make sure your title tags and meta descriptions are optimized, get an xml sitemap and robot.txt, make sure your content is quality and optimized, fix your permalinks, and install a caching plugin. Mostly the first 4.

If it's a new site i would suggest starting with a small amount of backlinks from high authority pages- press releases, guest posts, private blog networks etc. Drip feed them slowly and be carefull from over optimization...

1) metas
2) sitemap
3) inclusion in g analytics and webmaster tools
4) social profiles
5) loading speed
6) good and constant new content
7) b-links and related stuff

... just a list

I like hxxp://rapid.searchmetrics.com/ for testing web sites. I have never needed their pad tools. The free stuff is great.

site's loading time, H1 tag, Image alter text, then Share it in some of the high quality SB and Social media sites. that's it.
