Always thought it would be the ideal way of life, the Amish without religion or funny hats. Does anyone know much about this, would it be possible to buy land somewhere and not just build home but a community, no money, no bills (or less).

There is a member on here (forgotten who exactly) who has started a thread exactly like this. He was living off the grid completely and had some awesome pictures of his wilderness.

If anyone can help find this thread for the OP, im sure they would appreciate it

Wow - I thought I would be on my own with this one... Would be great to here from fellow hippies.

If you buy land you still have to abide by the laws of the land so in that way you can't really go off the grid I think.
You could make a spear and enter the Canadian woods but even then there are laws.

What you could do however is go into international waters and create something like Sealand.
Or, you could go to Somalia and just take some land by force. :P

Other than that I wouldn't know.

Hope this helps but if not please feel free to ignore as you see fit. :)

Yes mate but the government/state doesnt take kindly to people who can live alternatively (out of the system)

Just try it for a few weeks and see how much the police harass you

They'll literally force you to have water/electricity and use their system (money) to pay for it

There are many people doing exactly what you suggested as a way of combating the economic crisis etc

I highly recommend thesurvivalistblog.net for ideas spanning from expectations to planning.

Sure you can.
I would look into C & S America.
There is plenty of cheap land in some of these areas.

*Disclaimer: I am not a hippy and don't think many like minded people actually appreciate that term.
But I get you none the less :-)

But...if you have never lived off the grid before and know how to cultivate crops very well...your chances are slim for success.
Now..if you don't mind a little "grid" in your life then your golden.

I suggest a book called "the complete book of self sufficiency."
This guy does what you are looking at.
Everything is covered as far as basic needs are concerned.

It won't be easy, but I suggest you give it a shot. You will be glad you did.
Make sure and have some $$ saved up for those first years..."as you will need money to get away from money."
I f'kin sound like yoda berra, or was it yogi shiva? I forget.

Make it happen man, then pm me so I can visit. :-)

From wikipedia
In January 2007, The Pirate Bay attempted to buy Sealand after harsher copyright measures in Sweden forced them to look for a base of operations elsewhere. [SUP][/SUP]The attempt failed.
Wow, thats was a cool move!
